SITTING BY THE CREEK, Juliette heard footsteps from across the ravine and saw a very guilty-looking boy. She was trying to calculate who she should put on her team for baseball that Saturday since it was supposed to rain.
"Ah, the mystery man makes an entrance!" She said in a game-announced voice. He walked over but didn't cross as he shuffled his feet.
"Juliette, I'm really sorry for just leaving like that at Emily's." She could see that he was upset, but there was something else. He looked upset, and that made Juliette upset.
"Come here, Sunshine." She didn't need to repeat herself as he crossed and sat beside her, seeing her notebook with a skills list of her family members. She grinned and picked it up.
"We spun the team captain wheel yesterday, and it's me and Jasper. I obviously need Edward, but I don't know who else." She shook her head, remembering that he was upset.
"Now, what's wrong with you?" He met her eyes and could see that she needed to know. He bit his lip and looked away. "Do you remember when I told you that I...imprinted on you?" She blinked but did. It was the night that Alice came back.
"Yeah. We're, like, wolf soulmates, right?" He looked stunned that she knew, and she chuckled. "You really don't remember? Sam told me about them, and I wrangled it out of Emily one night when she was tired and I was babysitting."
His eyes widened comically, and she smiled warmly as she moved so that she was leaning on his chest, completely content. She seemed so calm while Embry's mind was racing to catch up.
"But—then—you know everything?"
"I know everything, Sunshine. Everything in the world. Why do you think that I'm going to prom with you? Oh, speaking of, I finally found a dress." He nodded, still not quite as calm as her.
"That's—That's good." She huffed, not liking how he was being, and flipped over so that she was sitting on her knees.
"Embry, listen up. You imprinted on me. Now, from what Emily says, it's either a protector, brother, friend, or lover. You wanna be my brother?" He grimaced, and she laughed.
"Me neither. You wanna be my friend?" He frowned and met those ocean-blue eyes. "I want to be more than friends. I've wanted to since I saw you in that grocery store." She blushed, and cleared her throat, incredibly flustered.
"That only leaves one more, Sunshine," she reminded as she leaned closer, a playful smile on her face.
"Lovers?" She grimaced. "Way to ruin the moment, C—" She stopped and let out a yelp when he pulled her to sit between his legs as he grabbed her backpack and put it beside them.
"This seems very undignified," she mumbled as she took her notebook and studied it, still smiling widely with extreme happiness. Embry read over the skills and sighed as he poked Alice with the pen.
