The crackle of the fire makes the atmosphere of the room seem.... so peaceful, perfect for a windy autumn night. It's not necessary hot outside, yet the sudden cold sends us running back inside with our tails between our legs. The low hum of the TV coming from the other room soothes my nerves. With two cups of tea in my hand, I walk toward the living room, where she waits.
"Oh! How did you know I wanted tea?" Manon smiled, the room warming... or maybe that was just me. "Well, for one, it's chilly outside. Very nice weather for lazily drinking tea while being cozily wrapped in a blanket." She took the cup from my hands. Immediately, taking a sip. "And.." I continue, "I also wanted tea, so it didn't matter if you wanted tea or not!" I grin at her, a soft twinkle in her eye.
Sitting down, she sets the cup on the coffee table before cuddling against me. I take a sip of my tea, shaking my head in disapproval, "I like it better when you make it." I reach over to also setting my cup on the coffee table. Manon sighs, placing on hand on my cheek, "and I like when you make my tea" I kiss her forehead, "We just like eachother... a lot." She smiles, "oh! I couldn't have wondered how much me like each other." She said in a sarcastic tone. I turn my head to hide my smile.
Today is our one year anniversary. Our relationship is nothing serious. It's been nothing but wholesome, we have had no... sexual tendencies and I'm completely fine with that. Being by her side is nothing more than a dream. A singular bird chrips outside the window.
"We should go for a walk." Manon sits up, her eyes wide and sparkling with love. "It's late... we should watch a movie instead" I gesture toward the same window. "What if I told you my gift for our one year anniversary has to do with going to a walk?" "Then let's go for a walk." I stand, offering my hand to her. She takes my hand as we head to the front door.
There is no need to dress up. This is our moment. Even if she would have asked to get ready, I would have said no. I want to spend this moment with her, the genuine, the authentic, the real Manon.
I let go of her hand, shoving my feet into my shoes and grabbing our coats from the coat rack. I hand her her coat, unlocking and opening the door for her as she slips the coat around herself. "Where do you have in mind?" I ask, lacing our fingers together for warmth. "We might need to drive there..." Manon presses the button for the elevator. "Anything you have in mind, we will do."

"Right here!"
I slow down, turning the car down a dirt road. A red sign says 'PUBLIC LAND. NO HUNTING'. With that in mind, I slowly drive down the road, waiting for Manon directions. "Stop here" she point up ahead to a huge field in between the trees.
We had been driving for around an hour, which is longer than any walk we've ever taken. The city had been left behind, and only trees upon trees lay around us. "You can actually see the stars here.." I mumble, turning off the ignition. She opens the car door, "Hurry!"
I look up to the sounds of her footsteps fading away as she runs into the field.

"Manon!"

We both sound like dogs. Panting, our mouths open, trying to catch our breaths. The car the size of my thumb. "We ran out pretty far.." Manon smiles at me. "We did." I sit on the ground, pulling my coat tighter around me. She settlings in my lap, her arms wrapped around my neck. "I love this.. I love you." The overwhelming swell in my throat refuses to let me speak my mind.
How I want to kiss her here and now. I want to want to see her smile. I want to hold her for all eternity. I want her to spill her deepest secrets, wishes, thoughts with me here in this field, with the beautiful night sky above us.
....
"The sky"
She turns her head. I hear a small 'wow' escape her mouth.
....
A

dream.
It's a dream.
The way the half moon is perfectly centered between two perfectly shaped trees.
The dot like stars that we used to draw as school kids. The way the clouds slowly fade downward into dark grey mush. Or that the clouds fade upwards into marshmallows. Or that a singular cloud was right under the moon, acting as a sort of cradle. They looked so painted.
The slow breeze seducing the purple and yellow flowers into a never ending dance. The grass joining in on the fun. Not a singular creature awake. No sound except the wind and the sound of our beating hearts.
The stillness. Why was it so quiet?
Not scary quiet. Not the calm before the storm. No. The peace. The peace after the war. The peace most of us will never meet.
The whole scene is straight out of a dream.
A fantasy.
I feel my eyes tear up.
For the moon seemed to bathe us in its shining brilliance. The grass shielding us from the world, the flowers as its beautiful army. The clouds as the souls of those who have gone. And Manon.
Here with me. Sharing this moment.
I cup her face in my hands.
"I love you, Manon."
She smiles, cupping my face as well.
"I love you too."
I kiss her, the tears of joy spilling out of my eyes.
