The Bombay sun beat down relentlessly, its intensity mirroring the furnace churning inside me. Frustration gnawed at my gut after another dead end. Tejas' story painted a clearer picture, but it left a gaping hole - the identity of the mystery man who orchestrated Ayushi's disappearance.
"The janitor, Raj," I said, pushing a photo of the man across Patil's cluttered desk. "He fits the description Tejas gave. Grumpy, tall, the heated arguments… it all points towards him."
Patil, his face etched with fatigue, squinted at the photo. "It's a possibility, Ragu. But let's hold our horses for a second. Janitors don't usually have the resources to pull off a kidnapping unless there's more to the story."
His words echoed my suspicion. Something felt off – a missing piece to the puzzle. We needed another lead, another angle. Deciding to revisit Ayushi's school, we hoped to glean any additional information that might have gone unnoticed in our initial questioning. This time, instead of focusing on Ayushi's classmates, we zeroed in on the faculty. Mr. Mehta, a nervous mathematics teacher who kept adjusting his spectacles, confessed he hadn't witnessed anything unusual. Mrs. Desai, the stern history teacher, offered a stoic "no comment."
But then came Mrs. Rao, a warm and compassionate woman who taught English literature. As she elaborated on Ayushi's passion for drama and her exceptional writing skills, a flicker of something akin to hesitation crossed her features."There was one thing," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "It wasn't necessarily suspicious, but… I did see Mrs. Kapoor, Ayushi's mother, talking to Mr. Verma, the science teacher, quite a bit lately. It seemed… more than just casual conversation."
Her words struck me like a bolt of lightning. Mrs. Kapoor? The distraught mother desperate to find her daughter? It seemed inconceivable. Yet, the seed of doubt had been planted.
"Talking about what?" Patil asked, his gruff voice laced with curiosity.Mrs. Rao shook her head, a frown creasing her forehead. "I couldn't make out the details. But it seemed tense, almost… secretive."
The revelation threw everything into disarray. What connection could Mrs. Kapoor have with the science teacher, Mr. Verma? Was it some kind of illicit affair? Or something more sinister? The possibility gnawed at me.Leaving the school, the midday heat felt suffocating. We needed answers, and fast. Back at the station, I dug into Mrs. Kapoor's background. The woman who had portrayed herself as the epitome of a caring mother started to appear more enigmatic.
A discreet inquiry revealed she was facing financial difficulties, her luxurious lifestyle seemingly on the verge of collapse. Mr. Kapoor, consumed by his business dealings, appeared oblivious or uncaring.A horrifying thought crept into my mind. Could Mrs. Kapoor be desperate enough to stage Ayushi's disappearance in a desperate bid for attention and possibly a ransom from her estranged husband? The idea felt far-fetched, but the financial motive was undeniable."But what about his connection to Mrs. Kapoor?" I countered, laying out the information I'd gathered. "The financial strain, the secretive meetings at school… There could be more to it than meets the eye."
Patil leaned back in his chair, a deep frown creasing his forehead. "We need to find out Mr. Verma's side of the story. And Mrs. Kapoor's. But we can't jump to conclusions either."
The following day, we found ourselves at the science lab, a sterile room filled with bubbling liquids and the faint scent of chemicals. Mr. Verma, a lanky man with a nervous twitch, looked up in surprise upon seeing us.
"Mr. Verma," I began, my voice"Mr. Verma," I began, my voice steely. "We need to talk about Ayushi Kapoor."
His face drained of colour, his twitch intensifying. "Ayushi? I… I haven't seen her. This is all quite terrible, isn't it?"
