The fluorescent lights in Patil's office buzzed overhead, casting a sterile glow on the frantic mess of papers sprawled across his desk. The photo of Ayushi Kapoor, a constant reminder of the missing girl, stared back at me from a corner. Yesterday's lead – the boy seen with Ayushi – had opened a Pandora's box of secrets, and the pieces we were unearthing painted a far more complex picture than a simple kidnapping.
"Alright, Ragu," Patil said, his voice gruff with exhaustion. "Let's hear what you found out about this mystery boy."
I filled him in on my conversation with Rohan, the classmate who'd spilled the beans about Ayushi and the boy. Apparently, their "secret relationship" had been an open secret within a small group of friends for the past three months. Rohan, smitten with Ayushi himself, had been heartbroken to witness their closeness. The boy's name was Tejas, and according to Rohan, he wasn't exactly a model student."Skipping classes, rumors about their kiss," Rohan had revealed, his voice laced with a hint of disdain. "He wasn't exactly someone Ayushi's parents would approve of."
Intrigued, we decided to pay Tejas a visit. His address, obtained from the school records, led us to a modest apartment building in a bustling part of Bombay. A scrawny teenager with nervous eyes answered the door. He stammered when I introduced myself as a private investigator, his face paling as I mentioned Ayushi's name.Tejas confirmed his relationship with Ayushi, but his story was riddled with inconsistencies He claimed they'd been seeing each other for a while, meeting up after school or on weekends. But when I pressed him about the day Sara saw them at school, his facade crumbled.
"We… we just bumped into each other," he mumbled, his gaze darting around the room. "It wasn't a big deal."
His nervous energy and blatant lies made him a strong suspect. However, something about his story didn't sit right with me. He seemed more scared than cunning, a pawn in a larger game rather than the mastermind.
"Tejas," I said, leaning forward, "did anyone else know about you and Ayushi?"
He hesitated, then shook his head, a flicker of defiance crossing his features. "No, it was just between us." The lie hung heavy in the air.Patil, sensing my skepticism, took over the interrogation. He employed a more direct approach, his gruff voice filling the small apartment. Tejas wilted under the pressure, finally confessing he wasn't alone with Ayushi that day.
"There was this guy," he blurted out, his voice barely a whisper. "He told me to meet him at the school after dark. He said he had something on Ayushi, that he could get her in a lot of trouble if I didn't cooperate."
A jolt of adrenaline shot through me. "What did he look like? Did you get his name?"
Tejas shook his head, his face etched with fear. "He was tall, wore a dark jacket. I never saw his face clearly. He threatened me, said if I told anyone, Ayushi would pay the price, I was scared, I didn't want to lose her but also I didn't had any option to tell about it to anyone because he had the love letter written by Ayushi to me, Ayushi had a unique handwriting so I instantly got to know that this man has something to do, which I feared but the pressure he put on me put me in a position that I couldn't tell about it to anyone,"
He went on to describe a tense exchange with the mystery man, who forced him to leave the school with Ayushi. Tejas claimed he had no idea where they went or what happened to Ayushi afterward. The fear in his eyes and the detail in his confession lent a disturbing air of credibility to his story.
"But then I heard that she was happily celebrating her birthday, so I was relieved but again the news of disappearance caught me off guard, now I don't know what happened to her," he started crying out loud. "I am sorry, sir,"
Leaving Tejas' apartment, a new suspect emerged – the shadowy figure who manipulated Tejas and seemingly orchestrated Ayushi's disappearance. The question now was, who was this man, and what connection did he have to Ayushi?
Back at the station, we delved deeper into Ayushi's life, searching for any clues that might lead us to the mystery man. We spoke to her teachers, neighbors, and anyone who might have seen someone suspicious hanging around her house or school.
One name kept popping up – Raj, the school janitor. A quiet, unassuming man, he mostly kept to himself. However, a few students mentioned seeing him stalking Ayushi in the school. They said that they have found Raj near Ayushi many of the times, but Ayushi never acknowledged his presence, so it might he Raj was a stalker amd he kidnapped her. The possibility struck me like a bolt of lightning. Could Raj be the missing piece of the puzzle? Was he the one who threatened Tejas and orchestrated Ayushi's disappearance? The animosity between them, coupled with Tejas' description of the tall figure, made him a compelling suspect.
"Patil," I said, my voice tight with urgency. "We need to find Raj. And fast."
