"Are these the same people your boyfriend works for?" I ask Kristy as soon as she finishes her long phone call with her man. She gets back to the couch where we've been watching some comedy show. At this point, I don't think anyone's been paying attention to it. Kristy was on a call, and I, on the other hand, have been thinking about the new job we start in two days. Will I do a good job? Well, we were told we'll undergo some training for the first week as it is mandatory, and I'm really good with receiving instructions. But I want to be perfect at it.
"Mace? Yeah, he works for them but in a sales department." She answers, looking down. I just nod as I try to get my attention back to the forgotten show.
"Ummh. I think I want to break up with him." She says about two minutes later while anxiously biting her lips. I turn my head to her, thinking that I've heard my own things.
"Huh?" I ask dumbly. Kristy loves that man a lot. More like obsessed. But she's not been talking about him lately.
"Yeah. You know how busy he always is?" I nod, urging her to go on. "Well, he's been even busier these past two months. I asked him what was going on, but he'd always come up with stupid excuses. So I checked his phone." She takes in a deep breath and releases it as if from a talking marathon. I only nod to her words.
"That Linda girl." She spits.
"He's cheating on you!" I shout in disbelief, but she shakes her head negatively.
"In short, from the conversation, I don't think Mace is really a sales representative. He's doing something dangerous. Involving illegal shipments." She says the last words in a low voice, I had to get closer.
"Why? Why do you think that?"
"They talked about some four crates, having to be taken at night at their normal place, then something about taking the crates to a warehouse."
"You said he works for Luka Lauder?" The question earns a look. She looks at me dumbly. "Well, if we're going to work for him..." I shrug.
"Let's just watch the stupid show." She sighs, and I suddenly feel guilty.
"Have you asked him about it?" I ask, but she shakes her head. "You have to. Then you'll know if you have to break up with him or not. Maybe you're just overthinking. So it's safe to talk about this." I try to reason. This time, she thinks a bit then nods in confirmation.
"Your turn." She starts. "I kinda feel that we got this job because of you. How?" She looks at me suspiciously. "Did you really get lost when you went to change the jackets?" She gasps at the last question as if realizing that I lied about it.
"I kinda feel we did a good job, and they were pleased with us." I answer instead.
"I don't really think they hire just anyone because of that."
"That's the only explanation I can think of. Furthermore, Jay said that was the reason, and it made sense." I remind her about the guy who came to the diner to offer us the jobs.
"Fine. But I still trust my guts." She ends the conversation as she changes the station.
"Time to sleep for me." I announce as I get up from the couch.
"Nighty." Kristy responds, and I give her the same reply.
I get into my room with a sigh, trying not to ponder about what Kristy suspects Mace might be up to as I know I'd come up with crazy ideas. I take off my trousers and climb into bed in my tank top and panties.
Just as I take out my phone, I see it ring, displaying an unknown number.
"Yes?" I answer before cringing. Why did I answer with that?
