Chapter 62: Back To The Compound

(Two days later)

(Wakanda)

Third person perspective

Steve has gone to Wakanda with Bucky and T'challa.

The new King has offered to help Bucky get rid of the HYDRA programming.

Barnes has just gone into stasis.

Steve leaves the lab and looks out of a nearby window.

A moment later he's joined by T'challa.

Steve: Thank you for doing this.

He looks at Rogers.

T'challa: Your friend and my father, they were both victims. If I can help one of them find peace.

Steve: If they find out he's here, they'll come for him.

The soon-to-be King steps forward and looks at the panther statue outside.

T'challa: Let them try.

(Three days later)

(Upstate New York)

Y/N's P.O.V

So, it's been three days since my fight with Steve and Barnes in Siberia.

Zemo was arrested and is behind bars in Berlin. And I've been exonerated in exchanged for bringing in Zemo.

Stark is also in talks with Ross about getting the Sokovia Accords scrapped as he now believes the Accords are bad for us as heroes.

Right now I'm in Upstate New York at the Avengers Compound helping Rhodey.

He's doing physical therapy with braces to help him walk.

Y/N: It's just the first pass.

Rhodey: Yeah.

Y/N: Give me or Tony some feedback, anything you can think of. Shock absorption, lateral movement. A cup holder?

Rhodey: You might wanna think about some AC down in...

He trips and falls to the floor.

I kneel down to help him.

Y/N: Whoa, easy. I got ya.

Rhodey: It's okay. Don't help.

He moves and sits on the floor.

Rhodey: A hundred and thirty-eight. A hundred and thirty-eight combat missions. That's how many I've flown, Y/N. Every one of them could've been my last, but I flew 'em. Because the fight needed to be fought.

I nod.

Rhodey: That's why I signed the Accords. I did it because it was the right thing to do, but now I don't know. I'm not sure what the right thing is right now.

Y/N: Yeah, I get it. Tony's still in talks with Ross, so I guess we'll see.

Rhodey: Yeah, guess so.

He looks at me.

Rhodey: Tony told me about what happened in Siberia. I'm sorry about your parents, man. That's a bad beat.

Y/N: Yeah. Thanks, Rhodey.

Rhodey: How do you feel after all that though?

I sigh.

Y/N: I don't know. For so long I always thought that if I knew how my parents died, it'd feel better cause I'd finally have closure. But now that I know... I don't know how to feel.

Rhodey: I get it.

I offer him my hand and help him up.

Rhodey: Thanks, man.

Y/N: You alright?

Rhodey: I'm good.

Just then we hear a knock on the window and see a delivery man.

Man: Are you Mr. Y/N L/N?

Y/N: Yeah. That's me.

I go to grab the package.

(Five minutes later)

After getting the package I go to my quarters in the Compound.

I sit at my desk and open it up.

There's a flip phone and a voice recorder with a message on it.

Y/N: What the hell?

I play the message and hear Steve's voice.

Steve: Hi, Y/N. It's Steve. I'm glad you're back at the Compound. I think it's good for you, everyone needs family. The Avengers are yours. Maybe more so than mine. I've been on my own since I was eighteen, like you, I know what it feels like to be an oprhan. I never really fit in anywhere, even in the army. My faith's in people, I guess. Individuals. And I'm happy to say that for the most part... they haven't let me down. You haven't let me down. Which is why I can't let them down either. Locks can be replaced, but maybe they shouldn't.

I sigh.

Steve: I know I hurt you, Y/N. I guess I thought by not telling you about your parents I was sparring you any unnecessary pain... but I can see now I was really sparring myself. And I'm truly sorry for that. Hopefully one day you can understand.

I pick up the flip phone and hold it in my hand.

Steve: I wished things had ended differently in Siberia. I really do. I know you were angry and I don't blame you. You had every right to be. Looking back on it now, I imagine I would've be the same way if I were your shoes. Just remember, no matter what... I promise you, if you need us, if you need me... I'll be there.

The message stops.

I sigh.

Y/N: First Nat. Now Steve. Both of them hide the truth from me.

Part of me wishes I could forgive them, but I can't. Not now, anyway.

Maybe not ever.
