The setting sun casted a warm glow over the area where the group gathered for the upcoming supper. John's laughter filled the air, bringing a smile to Estelle's lips, her heart fluttering. His happiness was her world, but a nagging worry crept into her mind.As she observed him from a distance, she couldn't shake off the feeling of unease. Why hadn't John mentioned the meeting in Kingston? Was he keeping something, or shielding her from distressing news?
Summoning her courage, she walked to the men and called out to her husband. "John, may I have a word with you?" Her voice was soft, and her colored eyes captured his attention. John excused himself from his companions and followed her to a secluded spot near the carriages.
Noticing her worry, he cupped her face and asked, "What troubles you, my dear?" Estelle took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts. "Your well-being and happiness are paramount to me, John. I can't help but fret over the day you had matters to attend to and returned with such a worried and stressed expression.
Please, tell me, what happened during the meeting in Kingston? What transpired there that has been weighing on my mind?" Surprised at her knowledge of his whereabouts, he hesitated before responding, "How did you find out about Kingston?"
Gently, Estelle explained how snippets of conversation among his friends' wives had revealed small details that had piqued her curiosity. "I worry that something may be amiss with your business, John. Please, put my mind at ease."
His expression softened, touched by her concern. "Darling, I don't want you to ever worry about something that might affect you, and I appreciate your care and affection. If you want me to put your mind at ease, I will share everything with you once we return to the mansion. Alright?"
Estelle nodded. As they walked back to the group, supper was served, along with some tea and some wine. The afternoon continued till evening began to summon. Everyone began to bid farewell to each other and returned to their estates.
Charlotte was fast asleep in the carriage. Ms. Anne offered to take her to her room, but John insisted on taking his precious daughter instead. He gently lifted and carried her inside the mansion. Upon seeing her, the cats meowed and purred gently as they followed them up the stairs.
He twisted the handle and went inside, laying her down on the soft bed. After kissing her on the forehead he closed the door behind him. The cats curled up beside her keeping her body snug and warm.
After that, John descended the stairs carefully, taking off his coat and handing it to one of the maids. "This way darling", he told Estelle, who was waiting for him at the entrance. The two walked into the private library with the fire kindling, illuminating the place.
Sitting in front of John, she patiently waited for him to speak. After what seemed an eternity, he gathered his thoughts and spoke directly to her about what was happening at the moment, including the other times when it wasn't the first time.
She took his hand and held onto it firmly, she was glad to know that John had told her everything and that she wanted to support and face the challenges they may overcome with his business. Soon, the clock chimed midnight, and they thought it was best retire for the night. John nodded in agreement.
When they arrived in the bedroom, Estelle changed into her nightgown while John prepared for bed. The moment they settled under the covers, she turned towards him, her eyes reflecting a warm glow.
"I believe in us, John," she whispered. His finger brushed a strand of hair away from her face, and his eyes were warm as he looked at her. "And I in you, my dear Estelle."
