This is a modern AU but they still bend. It's only that Zuko is not the fire price, Uncle Ihro has a small tea shop and Sokka and Katara don't come from the literal north pole.

”911, what's your emergency?”
”HELP ME MY CHILD IS IN THERE! PLEASE, HELP ME! MILIA, SHE IS STILL IN THERE!”
”Ma'am, please calm down and tell me where you at and why you are calling.”
”MY BABY IS STILL IN THERE. **************. I'm sorry but maybe I should take over. We are at *insert random street name* and the building is on fire. Should we stay connected?”
”Yes, firefighters are on the way. Is there anyone in there? The woman before shouted about a child?”
”Yes, there are..... The child and an older man. 50 or 60 years old maybe.”
”Is there anyone injured?”
”None of these who are out here.”

Zuko sat in the back of the fire truck and mentally prepared for what would come after he would exit the truck. He thought of himself as pathetic, a fire bender who feared fire. It wasn't exactly his fault, his father burned half of his facts after his sister was better in a certain academic subject. Afterwards he moved in with his uncle who instantly put him in therapy. He still had a scar from that day, but he learned to control his fear -To a certain point. Now, as he and his team arrived at the address the person inserted. A woman came running to the truck and the team, she was screaming and tears were running down her face. ”MY BABY IS IN THERE, PLEASE SAVE HER, I BEG YOU!” ”Ma'am, please come with me, your daughter will be alright. I promise you.” a police officer with brown hair spoke as he appeared behind her back. Zuko has never seen such a beautiful man let alone police officer in his entire 26 years of living. And his eyes! Zuko just met him and he already...- ”ZUKO! Man, come on. We have to delete the fire and the water benders don't have enough water jet. We need our fire benders!” someone shouted out of the crowd. The pretty police officer took the lady with him and looked at Zuko. Call me he mouthed and handed him a sheet of paper. 2636827954  -Sokka. What a nice name for such a cute person. Zuko then hurried into the burning building.

In the evening
Zuko texted Sokka

”So your name's Zuko, yea handsome?” Sokka's voice could be heard through the  phone as they were on a call right now. ”For someone as cute as you, you have a very flirty tongue. We just met and you already have a nickname for me? That's not fair, you know? What do you think about cutie if I am handsome?” Zuko flirted right back because two could play this game. ”Haa? Eh... It's nice uhm I guess.” the flustered cutie responded. Our dear fire bender just smirked at what he could do to the other one through the phone.
”Ah, right, how old are you anyways? Not that it matters but I would like to know if I'm about to fall for an old man, you know what I mean?”
”Damn. I don't look that old, do I? Just joking. I'm 26, how about you?”
”Oh, I'm only a year younger than you. You don't have a problem with an age gap this big, do you?”
”-gasp- One whole year?! This is intolerable. How could you assume that I would go out with someone that young? Hach!”
Giggles were heard from the other side of the line. Zuko thought that this were the most beautiful sound he will ever get to hear. They talked for a quite long time and decided to meet up the next weekend as both of them were off work.
”Do you mind if we meet up at the park with some friends of mine and my sister?” was the final question for the day because it was already 1 am. Zuko obviously agreed as he already couldn't say no to Sokka whom he just met.

The weekend
Getting ready

“Sokka, you have been in there for ages, come out!“ Katara complained becaus Sokka locked himself in the bathroom and refused to come out. “Alright, alright, you caught me. I'm bi.“ Sokka opened the door with his both hands in the air. His sister looked at him in disbelief before he smacked the back of his head. “You idiot, I meant that you should unlock the door and step out of the bathroom. And I already knew that, everyone does.“ Katara shook her head and quietly laughed as her brother's mouth hung open like a koi's. ”WAIT ALL OF YOU KNEW?! WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL MEEEE?”

”Zuko? Where are you going?” the elderly man asked his nephew as he saw that he was about to leave. ”I'm meeting a new friend at the park. He also brings some friends of his and his sister. Do you need anything I could bring you on my way back here?” Zuko asked right back. ”No, no, my dear, have fun with your friends.” Zuko nodded and waved uncle Ihro goodbye.

Meetup!

Zuko made his way trough the joggers and women with toddlers in strollers to the spot he and Sokka wanted to meet at. He saw a black haired girl, a bald boy, a girl with brow hair which was very similar to Sokka and finally, his new potential lover. He waved at them as soon as he thought they might see him. Everyone expect the black haired girl wove back at him. Eighter she didn't like him or... Ah! Of course, Sokka mentioned a blind friend of his, but Zuko couldn't remember her name. Torf? Thomp? Truph? TOPH! Or something like that... He wasn't quite the type of person to remember names. After he got to them, everyone introduced themself. “Hi buddy, nice to meet you, I'm Aang, I'm also an air bender and her boyfriend!“ the bald boy said while pointing at Sokka's sister- or so Zuko assumed at least. “Yea, well. My name is Katara, I'm Sokka's sister, but I think you could have guessed that. I can water-bend.“ Katara said suspiciously. ”Name's Toph. Blind. Earth bender.” the last member Zuko didn't know dryly said and Zuko also introduced himself quickly as he didn't want to waste their time. They spend some nice time together, all five of them and also shared some awkward moments together which Sokka and Zuko both assumed as a good sighn.

The next 2 months they hung out much more and went on dates. Both of them developed feelings for the other one and eventually Zuko confessed at a beautiful beach with the help of Katara and Azula (Don't hate me but I like Azula+we can make her nice in this one, can't we?) Sokka of course said yes and they were now 1 month into dating. Zuko couldn't complain, he was still in love as if it was the first day and Sokka, even though he was in quite many relationships compared to Zuko never felt so loved.

First month anniversary

”Hey, babe, you remember this place? It's where we met for the very first time in our lifes. I remember, I looked at you and thought: Wow, what a hot fire fighter. I couldn't even imagine that I would get into a relationship with you back then. Sometimes, when I think about us, it still feels surreal.” Sokka told his boyfriend as they were on their way to a café to celebrate their first month together as boyfriends. Zuko just smiled and thought about how this one mission, his very first mission, changed his life to so much better. And even if he just started a partnership with the man beside him, something was telling him that this was the man he will spend the rest of his life with.
