Matt woke up from a deep slumber, getting out of his bed, walking over to his dresser and pulling out some khaki shorts and a blue tee shirt, his standard summer outfit. He stood at his mirror, pulling on the shirt over his dark brown hair, cut short to fit society's rules.
His piercing blue eyes were the color of ice as he rubbed the sleep out of them. His pointed nose and high cheekbones fit perfectly with his slightly pointed ears. He walked out of his room and down the dark, narrow hallway into the square dining and kitchen area. It was a Saturday, which meant that he could do what he wanted all day. Matt's parents, Gary and Bella, were waiting for him.
Gary was a tall, overly exercised man. His light brown hair was fading to gray. His green eyes didn't even acknowledge that Matt existed most of the time. Gary was not exactly considered attractive by most people.
Bella on the other hand, was beautiful enough to be a siren. Her dark brown hair fell over her shoulders and back with grace, and her icy blue eyes were always full of joy. Her smile came from her cheeks as if she was a model. Her softly tanned skin fit together with her pointed nose and round ears. She stood below Matt, even when Matt slouched.
Matt was walking towards the door when they stopped him.
"Matt, we need to talk to you." Matt heard his father's voice, and turned around.
"Yeah, Dad?" Matt replied innocently.
"So, have you seen the colors yet?" Matt's mom asked.
"Yet? I've seen color since the first day of Middle School." Matt answered honestly. Gary stood up and walked over to his son, placing his hand on his shoulder for a brief second.
"Okay, well you know that when a person sees color for the first time, it signifies that a person has found their soul mate. Do you remember exactly when you saw color?" Gary asked with a serious face.
"Well, yeah. It was when I met Jack. I remember because the first color that I saw was the fiery orange of his hair." Matt smiled and looked down at the floor, a blush creeping upon him.
Gary's face hardened, and he looked away with a somber expression.
"No, that can't be. You must've been seeing someone else, a girl." Bella said nervously.
"No, it was Jack. I know it was." Matt answered looking at his family. Gary backed away.
"Get out of my house now, you filthy creature. You are a shame to this family's name." Gary said through gritted teeth.
"Dad, I'm telling the honest truth!"
"Get out!" Was the only thing Gary said.
Matt stood there, his mouth open and a lump forming in his throat. He briskly walked back to his room without looking at his mom, grabbed his school bag, his phone, and his earbuds. He walked out of the house with tears threatening to come streaming. Matt put his hand on the door handle, opening the front door and walking away.
"Matt, he didn't mean it!" Bella was chasing after Matt, who was already walking down the driveway, into the neighborhood.
"No, he did. I'm not going to shame you or him. Goodbye Mom, I love you." Matt said, tears streaming down his face. He pulled his mother into one last hug and sobbed into her shoulder.
"I love you too, just remember, Matt. Color is a gift. No one can take that away from you."
