Chase

Imagine...feeling the cool air pass around you, skates gliding along the ice, pucks flying into the goal, the crowd cheering. Complete bliss. The rush, the adrenaline, as you slide in precise movements.

Then it's good to take your anger out, too. Smash. You push a guy into the wall to get a puck. Or you fall yourself. Slamming into the ice. Losing a puck or a win. But as I said, it's all about the feeling.

"Hey, man!" Asher and Alex bust through the locker room doors.

They're twins, blond, and two of my best friends. The Marks twins. Idiots. But my best friends. I give a small nod. I don't really talk much at practice. People scare me. They're freaky and I'd rather stay away. I internally snicker. What kind of hockey player stays away from people? It's literally in the game.

"Sunshine." Kane nudges me. I hate when they call me sunshine. It makes me so mad.
But...hockey. I can easily mess em' up a bit and call it a day. Kidding. Or am I? Okay that was weird.

"Okay! Out on the ice in five!" Coach Holloway yells from the doors to us and the rest of the team.

Screw this crap. My jersey is stuck in my locker. If it rips— coach will kill me. I'm yanking and yanking until I literally fall back on my back.

"Crap dude! That was hilarious!" Alex laughs loudly as he comes and helps me up.

"Oh screw off." I bite out causing him to step back. I'm a little puzzled at the sudden motion and look at him only to find everyone staring at me.

"That was...a new attitude. You doing alright, man?" Kane asks from beside me.

"Yeah I'm fine." I say smiling widely again.
That causes them to chuckle.

"There's that smile, sunshine." Alex says popping his head out from the side of the locker.

I turn my head to finish changing into my gear seeing Jason Lee staring at me, a disgusted look on his face.

"What's your problem, Lee?" I ask the anger taking over me again. Kane, Alex, and Asher all stand behind me arms crossed looking at Lee.

"You smile too much, it's disgusting." He smirks acting unbothered.

That comment shouldn't affect me but it does. I'm about to say something when Kane speaks up.

"And you wonder why you get no girls," He makes the tsk sound as he walks back and forth. "Who would want a stupid, jealous, little boy for a boyfriend? Chase is twice the man you will ever be and that kills you. And that hits you deep to the core. So you think you can put him down? Grow the heck up." He gives a cocky grin.

"Nah. He just looks stupid smiling." Jason says and walks out the doors.

"Don't listen to him, sunshine. He's just mad you're better than him." Kane says placing a hand on my shoulder.

"Don't call me sunshine." I dip my shoulder causing his hand to fall and bust through the doors.

I look at the ice, the adrenaline already filling my veins, I grab my hockey stick I glide onto the smooth ice. I go around in circles until I feel someone push me to the ground.

"The heck—" I'm cut off by a sinister laugh. Jason.

"You know you're quite pathetic. You act as if you're the best hockey player in the world. Like you're so good looking and all the girls want you. Like you're better than me." He says with a stupid smirk.

"At least I don't live off of women's validation and even then...they still don't want you. And there's more to life than girls." I say glaring at him.

"Well at least I've had a girl unlike you." He says.

"Didn't she cheat on you...publicly?" I ask tilting my head.

"You little—" He's lunging at me when coach yells stopping him.

"Jason Lee! Do you want to be benched the rest of the season?" He scolds.

"No coach. I don't." He says looking down.

"Then I suggest you leave sunshine alone and play hockey like we're all here for." Coach Holloway says.

Jason shoots a final glare at me and gets in his position on the ice. Coach sends me a nod and I smile cheekily. I glance at the locker room doors seeing the team trying not to bust out laughing.

                                    ~ ~ ~

"So, you're getting into almost fights now at hockey practice, huh?" My sister, Cecilia says as she leans against my bedroom door.

"He started it! I didn't even do anything." I defend myself. All I did was smile and he got mad at me. What's wrong with my smile? Is it really that ugly?

"I know. Asher and Alex told me. They're blabber mouths. You know Asher once told me Alex crapped his pants in front of a girl he liked because he's lactose intolerant? Yeah, that's why Alex swore off of girls that month."

I bust out laughing. That's so embarrassing. I would die in a corner if that happened to me. Alex is honestly a really awkward guy but he makes it work. He actually is a cool dude when you get to know him.

And then there's Asher. Prank master. When we were kids we used to have prank wars. Me, Asher, and Alex. I was trying to sneak a confetti cannon on Asher when all of a sudden I turned the corner, finding a huge catapult. There he was, a whip cream pie on the launcher. Bam. Whip cream all over me. Let's just say...I was cleaning whip cream out of my ears for a week.

"Well, I got a date. Kane, your friend asked me out. He's a good guy." She says.

"Oh, Kane is awesome. You know he actually defended me today? He's a good one. Have fun." I say and she's off.

Kane didn't come along into our friend group until a year ago. But he fit in like peanut butter and jelly or whatever food goes together. I ran into him on the first day of a freshman year last year. We both weren't paying attention, falling smack dab on our butts, laughing hysterically. Yes, that's how our friendship started. It's kind of a funny "how I met my best friend" story but here we are. It's because we're idiots. And I'm not afraid to admit that because it's the truth. And the truth always wins.

Another thing about Kane that remains a mystery is he has a sister. Why is that a mystery? Well none of us have seen her. She goes to our school and is in our grade. But we don't know which girl she is. Maybe I've seen here and I just didn't know it was her. But half the team has a crush on her because she's such a mystery but their crushes change every week. No one takes them seriously. When you like a girl, maybe even love her, I think you should stay with her. Not change who you're with every week. But stay with the person that's for you.
