"Yeah, I do feel a bit guilty about the situation since I know it puts you in an awkward position. But it's really just to clear the air so she understands you're getting married and knows who I am. It's not a big deal. I'm not looking to have regular Sunday dinners or coffee dates with her.
I really just want to get to know her and understand who she is, all for your own safety, you know? It's important for me to be able to communicate with her if anything were to happen, but I can't do that if I don't even know who she is."
"You're absolutely right. I understand your concerns. I just don't like the idea of you two meeting in general," I admitted.
"But once I meet her this one time, we won't have to see her again. We can go back to our usual routine, and you don't even have to invite her to the wedding if you don't want to."
"Alright then. I'll arrange it for next week."
"Okay, no problem."
I gazed into his eyes and asked, "Any plans for this beautiful Saturday?"
He replied, "I was thinking of having a cozy day at home. Just the two of us."
"I love that idea," I responded as I got up from bed and headed to the closet to change into something comfy. If we're staying in, might as well be comfortable.
"Let's order some takeout," I called out from the closet.
"Sounds good to me."
I walked out of the closet, avoiding eye contact, feeling anxious about how things would go with my mom.
Alex glanced up from his phone and asked, "How are you feeling?"
"What are you talking about?"
"I can sense that something's bothering you. You're my fiancée."
"It's nothing, Alex. Everything's fine," I replied, leaving the bedroom. He followed me and gently pushed me against the wall, holding my arm.
"Don't walk away. I can tell that something's not right. Don't try to deceive me. Don't make me feel like I'm imagining things because I know when something's off with you," he said, looking directly at me. I avoided his gaze, but he lifted my chin to face him.
"I don't want my mom's words to make you reconsider marrying me."
"What do you mean?"
"My mom has a way with words. I don't know why, but it feels like a competition between her and me. She might say negative things about me, and I don't want you to doubt your decision to marry me," I confessed, tears streaming down my face.
He wraps his arm around my waist and draws me in. He leans in to touch his forehead to mine.
"I love you, okay? No matter what your mom thinks, I have no doubts about proposing or marrying you. You should realize by now that I'm not easily swayed. If I could, I'd marry you right now. So don't worry about anyone changing my mind about marrying you because that's just not going to happen."
"Alright," I replied, gazing into his eyes.
My phone buzzes with a message from my mom.
"Can we meet at the nice restaurant downtown?"
"Today?"
"Yes, 1 pm?"
"I have to ask Alexander first"
"K"
I glance up from my phone and meet Alexander's gaze.
"My mom wants to meet you today. Is that cool with you?"
"Yeah, sure thing. But are you ok with that?"
"Ye-yeah, I'm totally fine with that."
"Well, it's already 11 am so I better start getting ready," I mention as I walk past him and head back into the room.
I quickly text my mom to confirm that we'll be there.
I step into my closet and begin browsing through the collection of dresses I own. I'm aiming to impress my mom and show her that I'm healthier and looking better. Even though I doubt I'll get her approval, I still hope she'll at least be kind to Alexander.
"Feeling anxious?"
"Not really, I just hope everything goes smoothly," he replies.
I nod and resume sorting through my clothes.
After discovering the perfect dress, I quickly got ready. I chose a stunning red dress that accentuated my hard-earned curves from all those hours at the gym. I slipped on some sleek black pumps. My hair was silk-pressed a few days ago and still looked fabulous. I kept my makeup light and my nails perfectly manicured. I felt completely put together. The only thing on my mind was how my mom couldn't possibly tease me now.
Alex emerged from the closet in a sharp black suit. He paired it with a red tie that perfectly complemented my dress. He looked incredibly handsome.
I glance at him, a smile playing on my lips, and I comment, "You're looking great." He smirks back at me and steps closer, eliminating any space between us. "Not as great as you," he replies. I raise an eyebrow and run my hands over my body, teasingly asking, "Really? You think so?" His gaze intensifies as he takes me in.
"No, I recognize that look. You better not. We need to head to dinner," I say, taking a step back.
"I can be quick. I can definitely be quick," he insists.
"Alex, no. We can't do this. We have dinner plans."
"Okay fine. So, after we eat, it's just you and me," he mentioned before planting a kiss on my cheek. I didn't want to get lip gloss on his lips. He took my hand, led me out of the house, and we reached his car.
He held the door open for me.
"Are we taking the Lambo?" I inquired.
"You bet," he replied.
I grinned and relaxed into the seat, trying to ease my nerves. The drive there was quick since the restaurant wasn't too far away. As we entered, I spotted my mom at a table and we made our way over to her. She stood up and embraced me.
"Oh, my baby, I've missed you," she said, hugging me before turning her attention to Alex. "And you must be Alexander Miller. It's a pleasure to meet you," she said, smiling at him.
