Awkwardly sitting on the raggedy couch covered in soot, sawdust, and other powdery materials that he hoped wasn't asbestos or lead. Shaji gulps as he hesitantly brings the mug up to his lips, taking a sip of the drink his... hosts... had so kindly given to him.
He glances across the coffee table in front of him, doing his best to not make eye contact with Mei's parents as he takes in their details.
On his left was a rather scrawny man. He was slim, bespectacled, had pink short hair, and was only slightly taller than him. He wore a green sweater with a grey shirt underneath, with light brown cargo pants, overall looking rather presentable.
His facial expressions made it clear he was trying to put on that protective and intimidating father charade, but his body language showed quite the opposite. It didn't help with how nerdy he looked.
On his right was a woman with a well built body, and after having met Mei's sister, there was no uncertainty in Shaji's mind that this was Mei's mother. From the face to the eyes to the expressions and body language, there was no doubt this was Mei's mom. She was also covered in soot from head to toe, looking like she had just came out of a collapsed coal mine. And that's not to mention she smelled of molten metal.
The only feature that didn't make Shaji think Mei was some sort of clone experiment was the hair. The woman that sat across from him had long yellow hair tied up into a messy bun.
Shaji took one glance at the woman, then at the man, before internally chuckling, amusingly smirking to himself as he looked down at his drink. Looks like someone's genes were more dominant than the other.
He turns his attention to the hallway, and quickly takes notice of the two pairs of prying eyes that were trying to stay hidden at the top of the staircase.
He recognized the first pair belonging to Mei's sister, who he assumed was older than her by a few years. She had dragged the sleeping girl up to her room.
The other pair of eyes belonged to a boy, and judging by his appearance, was around five to seven years old. He had yellow hair, but shared more of his features from his father's side.
He turns his attention back to the two adults in the room, and sensing how tense and thick the atmosphere was, he placed down his cup. He forces his nerves to calm down, and puts on a friendly smile.
"So-"
"Please take good care of our daughter!"
Before he could even say a word, the two adults in front of him interrupted him as they bowed their heads.
Mei's father's weak attempt at being intimidating had quickly shattered, and he began to act much more like his appearance.
Mei's mother on the other hand... she looked just as oblivious as her daughter when she nearly caused his spine to twist into a pretzel. Though, there was a hint of hope and a pleading look in her eyes.
After a few more seconds of bowing sincerely, the two would raise their heads, before the father spoke up.
"Our little angel is such a brilliant and beautiful girl, but we could never imagine her getting into a relationship with how she is."
The mother would nod in agreement, hitting her husband on the back with a strong slap, nearly causing the poor guy to be sent flying forward.
"That girl of ours is hopeless when it comes to love, or anything social. She's just like her old man and I."
She slaps her husband on the back once more. This time, it sent him flying, earning a pained grunt from the man as he skidded across the table and onto the floor.
