The Neighbor ✨

I woke up to the screaching sound of my alarm clock. The sound vibrated painfully inside my skull, making my head throb. Groaning, I hit the snooze button and pulled the covers over my head, trying to block out the light seeping through the curtains. My entire body felt heavy, and my mouth was dry, as if I had spent the night drinking. But I knew I hadn't. The memory of last night was a blur, a foggy haze that I couldn't quite penetrate.

Sitting up slowly, I covered my head with my hands. My thoughts were dazed and confused. I remembered arriving home and then... talking to my neighbor. Yes, the neighbor I had never seen before. And then... nothing. Everything after that was blank.

I dragged myself out of bed and headed straight to the bathroom. Splashing cold water on my face, I tried to shake off the feeling. My reflection stared back at me, pale and tired. I examined my neck absentmindedly, noticing two small puncture marks that were slightly tender to the touch. Must have been a bug bite, I thought, trying to dismiss the unease creeping into my mind.

As I dressed for work, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. My clothes felt a little looser, and I couldn't remember the last time I felt this drained. I made a mental note to see a doctor after work.

The drive to work was uneventful, and I tried to focus on the tasks ahead, but the lingering fog from last night made it difficult to concentrate. When I arrived at the office, I was greeted by the usual hum of activity. However, something felt different.

"Rose, good morning," my boss, Mr. Thompson, called out as I walked in. He looked unusually cheerful.

"Morning," I replied, forcing a smile. "Everything alright?"

"Actually, I have some news," he said, beaming. "I'm retiring."

My heart skipped a beat. "Retiring? When?"

"Effective immediately," he said, his eyes twinkling with excitement. "I've found someone to take over my position. Let me introduce you to your new boss."

I barely had time to process his words before he stepped aside, revealing the new manager. My stomach dropped. It was her-my neighbor.

She smiled, a slow, knowing smile that sent a shiver down my spine. "Hello, Rose. It's nice to see you again."

The fog in my mind seemed to thicken as I tried to make sense of this coincidence. "Y-you're my new boss?"

"Yes," she said, her eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made me feel uneasy. "I believe we're going to work very well together."

Mr. Thompson clapped a hand on my shoulder. "I'm confident you'll find her an excellent leader."

I nodded mechanically, trying to suppress the rising tide of confusion and fear. "Of course. Welcome... Ms.?"

"Call me Celeste," she said, her smile never wavering.

The rest of the day passed in a surreal haze. Every time I looked at Celeste, memories from last night flickered at the edge of my consciousness-her eyes, her voice, the way she had commanded me to let her in. But every time I tried to grasp the memory, it slipped away.

By the time I left the office, my head was spinning. I needed answers. I needed to understand what had happened last night. Determined, I decided to confront Celeste and get to the bottom of this strange, unsettling mystery.

As I walked back to my apartment, the evening shadows lengthened, casting eerie shapes on the pavement. I reached Celeste's door and hesitated, my hand hesitated to knock. Taking a deep breath, I knocked on the door and waited, my heart pounding in my chest.

The door opened slowly, and there she stood, her eyes gleaming in the dim light. "Rose," she said softly. "I've been expecting you."
