Pacing around the living room with her fingers clenched into a fist was not how Kiana imagined her day to begin. It was the twenty-second of December. Two days had passed since she made Sal stop his destructive training and late-night escapades. It was a triumphant victory in her books, but before she could bask in its glory, new problems arose.
Kiana started her day early–around six in the morning. She had gone through her daily routine—freshen up, make some black coffee, check on Sal, and, at the end, prepare breakfast. Everything was fine. Even the weather today was calming. The persistent snowfall had stopped, and the sun, for the first time in weeks, had graced them with its presence.
Kiana hummed as her calloused pink-tinged finger held the helm of the frying pan, holding it in place and allowing her to stir the egg inside thoroughly. Today, she had decided to make scrambled eggs and toast. Nothing fancy but good enough to provide nutrition.
She had also prepared fresh orange juice—mostly because Fu Hua had bought too many of them on sale.
Kiana took a deep breath as she pulled the pan from the stove. Her fingers were tightly coiled around the wooden helm. She gulped. She was not confident in the technique she was about to try. Taking one final breath, she gently shook the pan upwards. Her sapphire blue eyes were pasted on the contents of the pan as the small chunks of golden-brown briefly flew up and then returned.
Yes! She mentally rejoiced. This was a technique that she had seen Mei use on multiple occasions. However, Kiana had never been able to perform it until today.
Returning the pan to the stove, she reduced the temperature. She then waved her right hand across the electric chimney above, switching it on.
"Gideon," Kiana called for the Home AI. "Can you check the toasts for me?"
<Affirmative user Kiana.> Gideon replied.
There was a brief pause, mainly because Gideon was trying to process all the data the toaster was feeding her. On the display screen across the room, Kiana could see the rotating circle indicating loading.
<The first batch is complete.> Gideon replied with a beep. <Would you like me to start preparing for the second batch?>
"Thank you, Gideon," Kiana replied, turning off the stove and pouring the scrambled eggs into a glass bowl. "But I think I can manage on my own."
<Affirmative.> Gideon replied as the display turned dark.
"Cooking is more exhausting than fighting." Kiana sighed. She wiped her hands on the apron and approached the toast machine opposite of her. She brought out the first batch and placed them on the glass plate. She made sure every piece was carefully laid, with the plain ones on the left and the butter ones on the right.
After that, she placed the second batch in the toaster and turned it on. The machine made a single beep, followed by the sounds of the rods heating, indicating that it had started working.
And with that, we are done with breakfast. Kiana smiled as she washed her hands. Since cooking the pizza toast two days ago, Kiana has been appointed as the head chef of Dorm Nine. Though it started as a prank, Kiana had proven herself to be a good cook in the last two days.
"I have already delivered the Capuccino to Bronya," Kiana checked her tasks. "Orange juice is ready, scrambled eggs too and toast as well." She nodded and rubbed her hands together.
"All right then," Kiana announced triumphantly. Her lips curled into a big smile as she removed her apron. "it's time to go and wake that dork up. Though I might stare at his sleeping face for a while." She giggled giddily. "It's not every day you can see him making cute expressions."
<User Kiana, you have a visitor.> Gideon announced, breaking Kiana's fantasy.
"Visitor?" She asked with slight annoyance.
<Yes.>
"Can you recognize the person?"
<Affirmative> Gideon replied. <According to the Schicksal database, the visitor is A Rank Valkyrie Sussanah Manatt>
Sussanah? Kiana thought. She placed the apron on the dining table and approached the front door. At this hour? I hope everything is fine. However, now that I think about it, I haven't heard from Theresa since we moved here. I hope she is doing fine.
Kiana turned the doorknob and pulled the door open. Despite the sun gracing them today, the cold eddies had yet to stop. Kiana, who was still clad in her light sweatshirt and white leggings, trembled.
"Good morning, Kiana." Sussanah greeted. She was dressed in her green-white Shchicksal uniform. Over her head, she was wearing a green barret, and her posture was tense. "Overseer Theresa asked me to deliver this to you."
"Letter?" Kiana asked. Her arms crossed as she gazed at Sussanah, who produced a white envelope with a golden wax Schicksal seal on it.
"I don't know the details," She replied, her voice controlled and very polite. "But I fear it has to do something with the Kolosten tribunal."
A/N Well this might be the last chapter with wholesome energy. Yesterday, while ideating a future plot, I stumbled upon some interesting ideas I will implement in the next chapter. It is experimentation with storytelling on my side so I apologize if the writing quality goes down a bit;-;.
Also, I want to thank all of you for the comments. Trust me that motivates me to do better every day. Once again I hope you enjoy the story! Happy Reading!
