"Do you believe in fate?" Snape finally asked, he had been standing in the doorway for far too long.
"What is this about Severus?" the headmaster asked through his reading glasses.
Snape pursed his lips, shook his head, as if confused, "Nevermind. I apologise for the disturbance headmaster," he said, heading for the door.
"Severus," the older man said, stopping him dead in his tracks, "is there something troubling you?" he had taken off his glasses and placed it next to his bottle of ink. This called for a prolonged conversation.
Snape paused and took a seat across the table, watching the rain, "Do you believe in history repeating itself?"
Dumbledore narrowed his eyes, he couldn't pinpoint what Snape was getting at, he had always been too vague, but he had a hunch, "Is this about Lily? I can see she's worried you."
"You must keep in mind that Lily is not the same person you met fifteen years ago," Dumbledore said, getting up from his chair, "and Harry is not his father," he stroked his phoenix gently and it cooed in response, leaning into his touch. "This is happening here and now. You must let go of the past, Severus. Or I fear those two will drive you mad," he added with a chuckle.
Snape stirred in his seat, he had only been watching the rain, when he had seen a dark shape dart past the school gates. He got to his feet, excused himself curtly, and before the headmaster could object, he was gone.
