Classmates waved at her or threw a causal smile at her as they rushed into their dormitories. Been immersed in a crowd as such years after becoming a death eater was strange and kind of overwhelming. it made her realise what she was missing out on; and of her stolen youth.
After two nights Harry began to notice the effect it had on her as they took a seat opposite each other in the Hall for breakfast."You just told me 'good morning'," he said surprised, chugging down a goblet of pumpkin juice.
"I did, didn't I?" Lily said through a mouthful of toast, "well, you know, I thought it was a thing you had going on here."
"Harry," said the freckled girl who had obviously been paying attention to their conversation, "don't you have Quidditch training after classes?"
He looked at her strangely, "this year's match is ages away. Besides, I can't anyway. Madam Pomfery will have a fit. Oh, sorry. Lily this is Ginny and Ginny this is-"
"-Lily, of course I've heard all about you," she said extending a hand, "the Harry Potter girl. It was hard not to, the whole school was talking about you."
Lily took the hand uncertainly, "Right. It's a pleasure to meet you."
The tinkling sound of glass on metal called the hundreds of rows of Howarts' students to attention. "if my memory has not failed me, it is July," said the wizard, "and this calls for a new program which has been considered compulsory for all students in their fifth year at Hogwarts."
"Goblins from Gringotts, aurorers, healers, broom makers, Dragonologists and many more will be joining us to help students with career pathways after wizarding school. Have a good day," he said, with a rumble of laughter.
The whispers in the hall build up into a crescendo of people trying to drown each other out as they discussed their career prospects with feverish excitement. While Lily seemed to find her breakfast looking more and more unappealing by the minute.
"So Lily, what do you-"
"I'm going to work the ministry of magic," cut in Ginny, once again.
"How about you, Lily?"
"I haven't really thought about it," she admitted, quietly.
"Well, if you plan on getting a job in the wizarding world, there are many options," he said over the rim of his goblet. "Ginny, Charles is a Dragonologist, isn't he?" a quick nod from the red-haired girl confirmed this, "you should try out for that kind of thing if you're interested."
"Am I interested in getting my eyebrows burned off by a seven hundred ton scaled creature? No thank you."
"You should really aim for something thats more on your level,"Ginny mused," after all, we can't all get three O's can we?"
Harry was struck speechless by Ginny's sudden rudeness, but Lily wasn't fazed. She blinked.
"I mean, this is after all, your first official year at school, yes?"
"I've been homeschooled..."
"Yes," she said brightly, "tell me more about that," she urged.
There was tension in the air as Nevilla took a seat next to her, oblivious to the uncomfortable silence.
Lily was the first to break it: "I suppose you want to be an aurorer?"
"Me?Yes-"
"-Of course you do," she replied, looking bemused.
After half an hour of being pestered over breakfast by a pesky Hermoine who had returned fresh from the library with career counselling guides, Lily left for her residence.
"Lily I need to speak to you about school materials. Cauldron and such. I've agreed for Hagrid to take you to Gringotts..." Droned on Professor McGonagall as she followed Lily to the common room.
"Look," Lily said, "I... All this," she gestured to the warm fire and the cosy chairs, "is temporary. I'm heading out soon. Out there-" she pointed out at the grey stormy clouds that were rolling in the distance.
The professor set her lips into a thin line, "I understand that you have been through a lot. But Hogwarts expects you to behave as any student would. Are you aware of the troubles the headmaster had gone through to gain you a place at the school?"
"Yes, I didn't think so. The gatekeeper will meet you at the prefect's bathroom today. You have an hour to get prepared."
