Despite her indignation at Professor McGonagall's abrupt change of plans, she found herself pacing the common room unable to think of anything to bring with her to the shops or wherever it was that she was going.
She sat on the windowsill and using her wand to trace shapes in the clouds. "Why are you so nice to me?"
"What'd you mean?" asked Hermoine.
"I mean... I don't know whether Harry has bothered to mention this, but," she braced herself for Hermoine's reaction, "I tried to kill him."
Lily stuffed her wand into the jean pocket and ran her fingers along the runes that were inscribed upon the brass locket. It was heavy. A hemisphere that has roughly the same diameter as her palm. It wasn't the weight that troubled her, but rather that its presence felt awfully like that of the Dark Lord's, looming over her.
"As a matter of fact, he has mentioned it. But you never told anyone that you saved his life."
"I didn't want to ruin his heroic reputation," she mumbled.
"It's worked both ways."
"He says that you've been set in the wrong direction-" Hermoine said offhandedly, "that you could change."
Unable to contain herself any longer, Hermoine
"Is that what he'd been telling you?"
They sat in silence until there came a deafening thump at the door and a robust man fought his way through the doorframe.
"Blimey Hermoine, aren't yeh supposed to be a' Charms?"
Hermoine flushed and scuffled out the common rooms.
"Sorry to keep you waiting sir," the large man turned a bight beetroot colour. "I hope you weren't expecting me to bring aything. I-"
"Tha's a'right. Come now, we're almost late." Although he was quite a peculiar sight in his steampunk goggles and large frame, the students along the hallway gave no thought and merely went about their business as what Lily could only assume, usual.

The next chap is going to be about her visit to Diagon Alley and there is going to be bit of a twist there.
