The professor droned on and on during circuit analysis while my mind wandered. I was really trying my best to concentrate, but it was almost impossible.

Why would I care about resistive circuits when one particular girl was bent on resisting me?

That wasn't my only worry, though. The text from an hour ago was still eating at me.

Mom: He's having dinner tonight.

Which meant today, Russell Connor would be returning from whatever business trip he'd embarked on. I gritted my teeth at the thought.

It was no secret that I hated my father. He made sure we never lacked, true, but sometimes money wasn't everything. Not when your wife cried herself to sleep at night.

When the last lecture finally ended around 1 p.m., I packed my stuff, slung my backpack over my shoulder, and hurried out of the hall. Luke and Heath were already at my locker, having what seemed to be a serious talk.

Heath, like Luke, was one of the basketball players. They're close, and since Heath was a decent human being, if you ignored his extreme antisocial moods sometimes, I'm close with him, too. He's the only son of a rich, self-made fashion designer and an absent father.

He had dark brown hair and stormy gray eyes, and combined with his mysterious air and brooding good looks, the ladies found him extremely perfect. I found myself rolling my eyes at the thought.

I caught the last of Heath's fervent warning to Luke as I neared them. "Man," he was saying, "you really have to tell him about it. This has been going on for a long time now."

I immediately knew they were talking about me. "Tell me about what?"

They whirled around at the sound of my voice, shock registering. "We weren't talking about you." Luke said quickly, but I didn't miss Heath's uncomfortable expression. He didn't even meet my eye. That was unusual.

"Luke, what's going on?" I narrowed my eyes in suspicion.

"We were just talking about practice." Heath finally met my gaze and shrugged. "Nothing you should worry about. We weren't talking about you."

I didn't bat an eye.

"Bro, chill. Or did mommy dearest not give you a goodbye kiss this morning?" Luke smirked, pulling himself off my locker and approaching me. "You look mad."

"I'm sure your mommy dearest dropped you on your head from five stories up when you were a baby."

He flinched. "Bro. That hurt me, right here." He jabbed his thumb on his chest.

A smile played around my lips. "Imagine where else will hurt if you keep opening your mouth."

"Now, you two lovebirds are making me jealous." Heath chuckled and made us both turn on him. He raised both hands in surrender. "Just kidding. Connor, we wanted to know if you wanna play today."
