ZON SQUINTED. His mirror reflection winced at him in disgust, his hair slicked back. No. Yuck. He shook his head and tousled the hair up, swiftly combing them from one side to another. Everything looked awful.
“Everything looks great.” Saifah laughed at him as if reading his mind. He was spread on Zon's bed in his black suit, patiently waiting as they were supposed to leave for Neo's wedding more than half an hour ago. “Whatever you do, you look dashing.”
Zon huffed, trying another styling. Saifah wrapped his arms around his waist, their eyes meeting in the mirror reflection.
“I'm serious. It's rare to see you so put together,” he said, taking a long look at Zon's figure. “Are you sure we have to go…?”
“Yes.” Zon rolled his eyes. “I'm the best man, remember?”
“Barely.” With a smirk, Saifah reached for Zon's hand and helped him with the cufflinks. Zon was more than capable to do it himself, but he didn't oppose; he liked how they looked in Saifah's hands. One shaped like a Sun, the other with a crescent moon on it. “They are beautiful,” Saifah noticed, fastening the second one.
“Thanks. I got them from my boyfriend.”
“Actually, it's from both Zen and I.”
“Oh, shut up.” Zon scoffed at Saifah's soft snicker. “I know.” He tousled his hair again, this time smiling.
The cufflinks were gifted at the celebratory dinner for him finishing his book; a rather symbolic trifle more than anything else, but Zon couldn't wait to finally wear them. And if Neo’s wedding was the first chance to do it? Well, so be it.
He took one last glance at his face and decided to put his hair down with just a small opening on his forehead. Once ready, he turned towards Saifah. His boyfriend was sitting on the edge of the bed, his sleeves rolled up, the collar slightly open. Zon sighed, moving in-between his legs and putting his hands on Saifah's shoulders.
“What are you thinking of?” Saifah's voice was soft, their eyes locked.
“That we should have sex tonight. It's been a year since Neo and Fai got engaged.”
His words took Saifah off guard, as he started to laugh, clearly confused. “Wait, you want to have sex ‘cause they got engaged?”
“No, silly!” Zon punched him in the arm. “‘Cause that's when we had sex for the first time.”
“Oh, I see!” Saifah's tone remained gently mocking. “That makes sense. So different from what we did two days ago, don't you think?”
“Oh, shut up.” Zon rolled his eyes, doing his best not to smirk. “Anyway, I'm ready. Are you going or what?”
Both the church and the venue looked lavish, dripping in pink flowers—real or fake, Zon wasn't sure. But they had to be expensive, he had no doubts. It was in his mind the whole ceremony, making him ponder how much money had gone into organising this event. He looked at all the silver decorations, draped walls, and Fai's wedding dress as the newlyweds swirled on the dance floor, remembering how once Zol told him the estimates of a wedding dress only. He’d almost had a heart attack at that very spot. So where did Neo and Fai get all that money from? Had they taken a loan for it? If so, was it worth it?
“Are you alright?” Saifah sneaked behind him with two glasses of wine, looking worried as he glanced between Zon and the happy couple.
“I couldn't care less,” Zon said, taking the glass with a smile.
And it was the truth. In all honesty, it was odd to watch Neo saying, ‘I do’, but not because Zon had any feelings left, but of how indifferent he had felt. Sitting in the church, he had expected to have at least a tinge of remorse, yet, he simply enjoyed the ceremony surrounded by his friends. Sure, the whole thing was way too long and painfully boring, but for something he had feared for so long, it wasn't even an ounce as bad. And yes—Saifah was partially the cause of that.
