Since I was little, I was treated differently from my siblings. Very differently. As the middle child, I always felt unwanted. Nobody seemed to like me, and they didn't try to hide it. At first, it was just words or things being thrown in my direction, small acts that still made it clear I didn't belong. But when I turned six, everything changed.
My family planned a vacation, but they decided they didn't want me to go. Instead, I was sent to stay with my cousin and his family. They didn't treat me much better than my own family, but they didn't abuse me either. They simply didn't love me. Eventually, I was left alone with my older cousin, Matthew.
Matthew was kind to me. He was the only person who ever was. I trusted him, until I realized he liked me more than he ever should have.
**Trigger Warning: Sexual Assault**
When his parents left for a few days, he decided it was time for me to "grow up." While helping me with my bath, he got in with me. I won't go into explicit detail. What matters is that afterward, I felt more broken than I ever had before. Later, he told my parents he would gladly watch me anytime they needed him to. They agreed.
For the next eleven years, things only got worse. The verbal abuse turned physical. They began refusing to let me eat, telling me I was getting too fat and that no man would ever want me if I stayed that way.
