Ice skating feels like gliding on a smooth, glassy surface, almost as if I'm effortlessly floating. The cold air brushes against my face, energising and refreshing, as I navigate on the ice with a mix of grace and determination.
Each push off the ice sends a sense of speed through my body, while the rhythmic sound of blades carving into the ice creates an indescribable music to my ears.
Balancing requires a blend of focus and relaxation, making me actually aware of every muscle and movement.
Every turn we take makes me go faster, until I have to slow down, section 7 lies before us.
"What are we searching for again?"
Mar asked stumbling at my quick stop, her breathing fast.
"An exit" I look at her up and down "Need a break?"
"No klank and no-"
"Okay, 5 min break."
"I said I don't need one."
"I can tell."
"Quit fighting you two, will just take a 2 minute break, I'm exhausted as well." Harriet steps in.
I regret my lousy mouth, it's just how I show my love to people I'm afraid to lose.
And Mar is one of them, she's been there since day 1 with me just like Harriet and Sonya, if I ever loose them like Anne, I don't know what I would do. I could never forgive myself.
"I'm going to go ahead a little."
I don't wait for an answer, I skate into the opening with the 7 sprayed on the wall.
I rue that choice straight after my skates hit the floor behind the entrance.
The concrete floor.
"For sticks sake...!"
My mumble goes under the thud of my body falling on the floor.
"Finch! Dia, you okay?"
Mari rush skates over to me, making the same mistake as me.
"It's concrete!"
"Didn't even notice." I answer my head throbbing hopefully I didn't hit my head too hard.
"Be careful! Come back, we can search this some other time, it's not normal that ice floor in this section suddenly becomes concrete!"
"Just 5 minutes, it's only going to close in like 8 hours."
I rest my eyes, just for a little.
"No, I'm serious Diana! Mari? Mari, Diana?!"
"Give us a second-" I hear Mari mutter.
"No, come back straight away-"
A earthquake makes my eyes flutter open.
"FINCH! THE SECTION IS CLOSING! ITS WAY TOO EARLY FOR THAT! COME BACK!"
I scramble to sit up, I try to stand up but the ice skates make me struggle.
In the corner of my eye I see Mari struggling just the same as me.
"MARI, CRAWL!" I scream over to her, following my own advice I crawl to the almost closed space.
Too late.
I bang on the door.
Because of me Mari will die!
"Save your energy, Dia!"
"No, Mar, it doesn't matter, we'll die anyway."
"NO YOU TWO WONT! JUST STAY THERE ILL FIND A WAY TO-"
"Harriet stop, go back to the Spring, tell Ximena; you're the new Jailor of the Mappers, and tell Sonya we'll miss her just like you."
"What, Diana don't give up, there's still hope!" Mari tries again.
"NO THERE ISNT, THERE IS NO EXIT, NEITHER TO SECTION 7 NOR TO THE MAZE!"
Mari steps back a few steps.
"No, Mar I didn't mean to scream at you..."
A shaking making us fall to our feet again.
Finch, that hurt.
"Harriet, are you okay over there?" Mari asks in concern.
Silence.
My anxiety growing now too.
Now I ask.
"Harriet?!"
Nothing.
"HARRIET!"
The doors grumble and slowly open.
I sigh in relief, still worried about Harriet though.
But soon after the door completely opened the relieved silence turned into a worried one again.
There wasn't Harriet and not the corridor we were in moments before.
This wasn't the Maze we knew.
No ice, just concrete and ivy.
We aren't in our Maze anymore.
