Anakin Skywalker has been fighting his battles since he lost Padmé Amidala. The only reason that had him hanging on was his son, Luke Skywalker. The six-year-old boy saved his father unknowingly.
The Jedi has spent the last years putting himself in danger, fighting against everything and anything in order to escape the pain that settled into his soul. Anakin already lost count of how many missions he's been to. He stopped counting, to be honest.
It was relieving for him to get back home to his son, even though sometimes he would show up all bloody and beaten up. Anakin never hid from Luke who he was, but he made sure he didn't want his kid doing the same as he did. Not until he felt like he could allow the boy to do so.
Ever since his traumatic episode of losing Padmé, he was never the same anymore. The coldness that etched into his heart made him lose the feel of kindness and affection for other people. All he wanted to do was kill Palpatine. His anger grew wild, and he was always eager to find the Sith and murder him.
Obi-Wan was supposed to be by his side, but he never wanted his former apprentice to become evil. So he did what was best for him, he stepped out. Anakin became vengeful and unmindful. He wanted to destroy whatever stood on his way.
The last six years weren't easy for him. Having Luke was the only reason why the Jedi was still sane. However, he didn't feel like trusting anyone else anymore. He didn't trust Obi-Wan now, who was supposed to be like a brother to him.
It took a lot of Anakin to trust C-3PO and R2-D2. He knew the Droids were loyal to the ones who deserved it, but his guts always told him otherwise.
Not only does he have trust issues. He doesn't want to fall for anyone again. Because at some point, he knows it will happen again. He knows he's going to lose them and he's willing to prevent that from happening.
