AFTER DISMISSING ALL the other campers, chiron gestured me over. my heart skipped a beat. would he kick me out?

rachel and annabeth went over to chiron together. they exchanged what seemed like some serious words before chiron sent them away as well.

as the other campers shuffled away from the campfire in groups, they would glance back at me, their faces weary and judgmental. they whispered in hushed voices to each other.

i saw leo, piper, and jason just standing there together. i looked away quickly, embarrassed. i think the grass beneath my feet shriveled a little too. what would a humiliating moment be without all plant life around me immediately dying?

i approached chiron, staring at my own two feet. i suddenly felt like i was back in school, walking to the front of the class, awaiting the teacher to hit me with a wooden paddle. or— even worse— the dunce cap. i got the dunce cap so often they might as well have just given me legal ownership over it.

i didn't want to look at chiron's face. i preferred not to see the hatred in his eyes when he tells me to pack my nonexistent bags and take a hike.

"i understand you must being feeling very confused right now, camille."

why must he prolong this?

"we've never had a child of a titan at this camp before."

against my better judgement, i looked up. chiron didn't look mad. he had that unreadable expression he nearly always wore.

i shuffled my feet in the grass. "so... do you want me to leave...?"

"no, of course not. just because we have never had a child of titan does not mean you cannot be the first. you are paving the way for a new generation of demigods."

i nearly choked in surprise. paving the way? i just got here! "but— um... aren't titans bad? i mean, didn't they go against zeus during the titan war? i thought they were sent to tartarus."

"yes, many titans did fight against zeus and the olympians during the first titan war, but not all. some titans were good. like your mother, styx, was one of the first titans to side with zeus. for her loyalty, she was rewarded by becoming the titan-goddess of the river styx. so whenever a god wants to make an oath, they have to swear it upon her. she reigns her punishment on those who break their oaths."

i rubbed the back of my neck nervously. "that's an odd reward."

"indeed, but your mother has one of the most important roles of all the titans."

if my mother was so important, why didn't she ever visit me? i didn't understand how she could be so "loyal" but lack loyalty to her own daughter.

this whole gods thing still didn't make sense to me. i knew greek mythology. hell, i was born and raised in athens! but i also knew that they were myths. i was always told that there was only one god, and that was the christian god. i was raised my entire like as a greek orthodox christian. this would be a lot to adjust to.
