03. chapter six

━━━━━━━━ ( 💫 ) ━━━━━━━━

LEO RECEIVED AN EXTREME MAKEOVER.

first, he summoned a pair of welding goggles from his helmet and stuck a wrench in his back pocket (why exactly, i had no clue).

"gimme your arm," i said. i uncapped the sharpie marker.

leo stuck his arm out and i grabbed it firmly. i watched his eyes widen suddenly and wondered if i hurt him, but i was pretty sure i didn't grab him that hard.

"what are you going to write?" hazel asked.

i thought a moment. then an idea came to mind. i smiled. "just wait and see."

i rolled up leo's sleeve to reveal his biceps. i began scribbling away. i was extremely aware of the contact my hand was making with his arm as i drew. i could feel my heart beat in my chest.

"check it out," i announced, taking a step back and recapping the marker.

the tattoo said: HOT STUFF, with a skull and crossbones.

i wasn't very good at drawing, so it wasn't very neat, but you could at least tell what it was. hazel could obviously tell what i wrote because she fanned her face in shock.

"sweet!" leo said. "this totally looks real."

"wait." i held out my hands toward the river. a stream of water shot out and doused my hands. i nodded.

"show off," leo muttered.

"shush." i took my wet hands and began running them through leo's hair to grease it back. when i was younger, that was what all the guys did with their hair, so i figured why not?

i stepped back and made a picture square with my hands. i peered at leo through the space in between them. i shook my head in disapproval. "you're still missing something."

"really?" hazel said. "i think you've done enough." she looked pretty shocked and flustered.

i pondered for a moment, think what else could add to the ridiculous costume. then an idea came to mind and i wasn't sure if it was a good one. it was definitely a stupid one, but i told my brain to shut up. it was the 21st century, anything was possible now!

"um, leo. could you maybe possibly by chance produce lipstick from that tool belt of yours?"

leo shrugged. "i can try. but— why?"

i smirked, an uncharacteristic expression on my face. "you'll see."

he fished into his tool belt and pulled out a tin of breath mints. "um— that's not what i needed, but i think these are necessary."

he handed them to me. he then stuck his hand back into the tool belt. after a few moments, he pulled out a stick of red lipstick. he held it up like, is this what you need?

"perfect." i snatched the lipstick from his hand. i took a deep breath. "you're going to need to bear with me on this one."

leo and hazel shared a glance of confusion, but both turned back to me expectantly.

i uncapped the lipstick and applied it to my lips. i could almost be one hundred percent certain that i looked like a clown with lipstick all around my face since i didn't have a mirror, but that wasn't important.

mind over matter, i told myself. breathe in. breathe out. i grabbed leo's face and planted a kiss on his cheek. when i pulled away, the red imprint of my lips was left. he made an inhumane noise. i could hear hazel gasp behind me.
