9. A Safe Place?

When the door opened, it took everyone a few seconds to get their bearings straight. Once they did, they all raised their weapons forward, and Blake helped Daryl cover the back.

The room the door led too was huge, but it was only the lobby they were in. Imagine how big the other rooms were.

"Hello?" Rick called out. His voice echoed throughout the place. Everyone was on high alert, their eye widened as they scan the room. Then, they heard a gun click, and everyone turned toward the direction of the noise, including Blake.

"Anybody infected?" A man shouted as he cautiously walked out from behind the wall, gun in hand. He looked horrible, to say the least.

Daryl, without a word, grabbed Blakes arm again and pulled her behind him. Blake still had her knife firmly gripped in her right hand.

"One of our group was. He didn't make it." Rick said, still aiming his gun.

"Why are you here? What do you want?" The man asked quickly.

"A chance." Rick said as he let out a shaky breath.

A chance. What were their chances with this place? Surely it would be safer than the quarry. It had to be, Blake thought.

"That's asking an awful lot, these days." The man said.

"I know." Rick sighed. He knew that whatever "chance" they had was probably slim, but what else could they do?

It was quiet for at least 30 seconds. Everyone was probably trying to gauge the man's next move.

"You all submit to a blood test. That's the price of admission," The man finally said.

Blake's heart dropped for a split second when she heard those words. She hated needles. If she had to say what her worst fear was, it wouldn't be walkers. It would be needles. She would deal with it, though. She had to.

"We can do that." Rick said.

The man lowered his weapon, and the air became less tense. "You got stuff to bring in, you do it now. Once this door closes, it stays closed." He warned.

A few of the adults, including Daryl, ran outside to grab all the bags. It took them less than a few minutes. Once they got back inside, the door closed almost immediately.

Once everyone began to follow the man, Blake stayed close the Daryl, staying one step behind him at all times.

The man began talking to someone named "Vi", and Blake thought he was cray, because she didn't see anyone else in the room besides him and the rest of the group. "Vi, seal the main entrance. Kill the power up here. He said. Some big metal doors closed over the glass ones.

"Rick Grimes." Rick introduced himself to the man.

The man looked at rick hesitantly for a moment before responding. "Dr. Edwin Jenner."

Dr. Jenner led them all to a big elevator. That was another thing Blake was afraid of, for some reason. She stood in front of Glenn, and in-between Carl and Sophia as she looked around awkwardly.

Then, Daryl suddenly spoke. "Doctors always go around packing heat like that?"

Of course he would ask that, Blake thought as she refrained from rolling her eyes.

"Ah, there were plenty lying around. I familiarized myself," Dr. Jenner said. It made Blake wish she had her own gun. She would be using her dads, if it was still there. But it wasn't. It was out in the city, wherever Goerge's body was. "But you look harmless enough," Dr. Jenner continued. He looked down at Carl. "Except you," he said, earning a confused glare from Carl, followed by a small smile. "I'll have to keep my eye on you." Dr. Jenner said.
