Chapter 49 | The Final Act

Liz held her breath, her eyes searching for her friends as they floated quickly down the sewer. Noticing Jim passing by, she quickly grabs onto him as the boy does the same, their bodies spinning against the torrential current.

In the distance ahead, AAARRRGGHH had stopped himself, standing on the ground, acting as an anchor. As Blinky and Draal passed, he grabbed onto them and bit Toby's strap to keep him still. The boy puffed his cheeks, keeping his mouth closed, which muffled his screaming.

When Liz and Jim passed, Jim held onto Liz as he attempted to reach for Toby, who did the same. Their hands barely grazed, and the water current forced them apart. Floating away, Jim and Liz continued to fight against the tide before their bodies slammed into a set of bars.

Groaning, Liz opened her eyes, only to widen when she saw Bular heading towards them. Before she could react, he slammed into them instantly, the sudden impact taking down the gate as the rapid current pushed them out into the canal. Liz struggled to swim against the flooding waters, scrambling for air. Finally, her head broke through the surface with a gasp as she fought against the strong tides to stay afloat.

Looking ahead, she noticed the Arcadia Oaks Canal bridge fast approaching. Then, to her surprise, Jim appeared in his Trollhunter armor, standing on the support beam. Coughing, Liz shouts for him, waving her arm to get his attention. "Jim!"

"Liz!" He called out, seeing her in the water and approaching the bridge. However, his back turned on her when he heard Bular approach him from behind with his two swords out, ready for combat.

Seeing Jim was preoccupied with fighting Bular, Liz quickly conjured a silver rope, single-handedly whipping it around one of the metal beams. With the remaining strength she could muster, she pulled herself out of the torrential waters and began to climb when she heard a roar followed by shouting and the sounds of clashing swords.

Reaching the support beam, Liz hoisted herself up onto the metal surface and turned her head to see Jim run up the blade of Bular's sword that had pierced the metal beam, kicking himself off of Bular's head and slashing him in the back. The giant troll cried out in pain before turning, only to find Jim nowhere around.

Catching her breath, Liz grabs her amulet. "By the grace of the Arcane, magic is mine to command."

A flash of cyan light encompasses her figure until Liz is donned in armor, raising her arms as a bow appears in her hands with an arrow of light cocked at the ready, its sharp end pointed at Bular. Upon noticing her presence, he began to turn around when she immediately released the arrow, the projectile weapon bursting upon impact as he stumbled back with a roar.

Quickly, Liz conjured another arrow of light as the Gumm-Gumm prince righted himself, growling furiously. She shot again, but Bular blocked it with his sword this time, though the impact pushed him back slightly. Behind the troll, Jim appears from below the metal support beams and charges at him, pulling his sword out of thin air. Before he could strike a blow at the troll, Bular had heard him, instinctively turning around, catching the boy by the arm mid-strike, and holding him up as he prepared his sword for the killing blow.

"You kill me, and the amulet will never open the Bridge," Jim grunted as Bular sneered. "There will always be other Trollhunters."

"Not if I can help it!" Liz said as an arrow landed on the troll, bursting upon impact, barely missing Jim. Using the distraction, Jim lifted his legs to kick Bular in the face before summoning his sword to his other hand and swinging it back. He cut himself from Bular's grip, the troll screaming at his now sliced forearm.

"You want to see Dad. I get it, trust me. But we don't always get what we want." Jim mocked, slightly hinting that he wanted to see his father as well, though maybe to kick his ass. The taunt hit a nerve inside Bular, his roar of anger an obvious sign as he charged at Jim, slamming his blade against Jim's. The force pushed Jim back, causing him to fall on his behind. As Jim scrambled back from Bular's advances, Liz jumped from behind Jim, her longsword colliding with Bular's.
