The next day, as I waited for Roxanne to arrive, a mix of excitement and nervousness buzzed through me. My mom came to visit me last night, she was so worried but I saw the tension lift off her shoulders when I said Roxanne has been taking care of me.
My mom always loved Roxanne, she used to treat her like a daughter. I always had this feeling in my stomach like I broke their relationship away.
I had been looking forward to this moment for a long time, out of everyone only my mother knows how much agony I've been through after leaving Roxanne..
"Mom, she's going to be so happy to see you,"
I said, glancing over at my mother, who was sitting beside my hospital bed with a kind smile on her face.
"I'm happy to see her too, Charles. It's been too long, I miss her." she replied, her eyes reflecting the same feeling I felt.
A few minutes later, there was a soft knock on the door, and I saw my mom getting excited to finally see her after all these years.
"Come in, Carter!"
I called out, knowing very well she gets annoyed when I call her by her last name.
The door opened, and Roxanne stepped inside, her eyes widening in surprise as she saw my mother sitting next to me.
"Mrs. Leclerc!" she exclaimed, a smile spreading across her face.
"Roxanne, dear!" my mom responded, getting up to hug her warmly. "It's been so long." When they were hugging Roxanne was looking at me with teary eyes whispering "Thank you".
I whispered "No. Thank you.".
I watched as the two of them hugged, a sense of nostalgia washing over me. Seeing them together again brought back so many memories of happier times, before life had become so complicated.
Roxanne pulled back slightly, her eyes misty with emotion. "I've missed you so much," she said, her voice trembling with joy.
"And I've missed you too, Roxanne," my mom replied, her tone filled with affection.
"Charles has told me so much about how you've been there for him. Thank you, and can I say how beautiful you look darling? You look like a princess."
Roxanne glanced at me, her eyes softening with gratitude. "It's nothing, really. I'm just glad I could help, and Thank you Mrs.leclerc. You make me so happy, I missed you so much over these years.".
"Not 'nothing'," I interrupted, smiling at her. "You've been amazing, Rox. And I knew this would make you happy."
Roxanne's eyes met mine, and for a moment, the connection between us was strong, a silent understanding passing between us.
"Alright,I'll leave you guys alone. I need to go grab a cup of coffee. I'll see you guys later."
After my mom left, it was just Roxanne and me in the room I couldn't help but be mesmerized by her, the way her eyes sparkled with enthusiasm, the movements of her hands as she spoke, the way her lips moved.
"You didn't tell me this was my surprise!" she exclaimed.
"Well, didn't you like it?" I asked.
"I loved it." She answered quickly
She was biting her lip again, a habit she had when she was thinking a lot or particularly engaged in what she was saying. It drove me crazy in ways I couldn't quite explain.
I watched her, barely hearing the words she was saying, completely captivated by her presence.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" she asked suddenly, her voice low as she noticed my intense gaze.
Without thinking, I reached out and gently touched her lip, feeling the softness under my fingertips. "Don't bite your lip," I said, my voice low and rough with the effort of keeping my emotions in check.
"I am losing it, Carter."
Her eyes widened, and she inhaled sharply at my touch. For a moment, the air between us crackled with tension. She looked at me, her expression a mix of surprise and joy.
"I- Is that so?," she stammered, her cheeks flushing.
"I can't control myself," I replied, my thumb still brushing lightly against her lip.
"You drive me crazy, Carter."
She bit her lip again, and rolled her eyes "Not the name again" I couldn't suppress a groan.
"You're doing it again, and did you just roll your eyes at me?" I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper."
Roxanne's breath hitched, and I could see the conflict in her eyes-the desire filled with uncertainty. Slowly, I let my hand fall away, not wanting to push her too far too fast.
Before I made a move, I thought about what had happened in the past. Afraid to repeat it again,I stopped myself.
She exhaled shakily, saying "I need to run some errands, See you evening?"
I shaked my head saying "Mhm...see you soon, Carter." Winking at her.
I could see her smile as she walked away
"Don't wink at everyone you see, Charles."
"Only you, Roxanne." I replied back.
I was so tired, my energy was all drained and went back to sleeping. Of course, I couldn't stop thinking about her. How did i even get in this situation. She makes everything look so easy.
