Chapter 6 - Jumping To Conclusions
"Is not Allah the wisest of Judges?" [Quran 95:8]
Zarina's POV
"Hey, mum?" I asked while eating my breakfast peanut butter and honey sandwich, which is by the way one of the best creations of all time.
"Yes, habibti?" She pulled out a milk carton from the fridge and closed the door.
"Is it okay if I have a friend sleep over this weekend?"
She stopped what she was doing and set the milk carton on the counter. She turned to look at me with a smile on her face. "You made a new friend? I'm so happy for you! Since when?"
"Since earlier this week."
"Of course you can! As long as it is okay with her parents, it's okay with me," she smiled. "Make sure you two don't stay up all night talking and playing video games and stuff." Darn it! She ruined my master plan.
"Alright, mum." She planted a kiss on my forehead and took my empty plate.
"Now go to school! You're going to be late! Do you want me to drive you today?"
"No it's okay. I'll be on time, don't worry."
"Okay then," A wave of worry washed over her expression. "Just... be careful. I don't want anything to happen to you like... like last time." She placed the dishes in the sink.
"Mom," I reassured her. "I'll be okay. Don't worry."
"I can't promise that. I'm your mother, it's my job to worry about my children. Oh! I almost forgot, I have something for you!" She heads towards one of the cabinets by sink and reaches for something.
"Really? What's the occasion?" It's not even close to my birthday...
"There's no occasion. I just wanted to give you something." She grabs something and shuts the cabinet. She strides to me with a happy expression. "Here. I thought this might be useful in the future. This is a serious thing and it is not a toy."
I look down into her open palm and gasp. "Oh my goodness. You got me pepper spray??" The tiny spray had a long string tied to it, along with a keychain ring.
"Yes! If someone else even DARES to get near you, spray 'em real good in the eyes. I want you to be able to protect yourself in case I'm not there," Sadness loomed over my mother's face. "You ended up in the hospital by some crazed lunatic. I was so far from you and I couldn't have helped in that situation. You don't know how scared I was, habibti," She took a deep breath. "Alhamdulillah, you are now well and nothing absolutely harmful happened to you."
I stood up from my chair and gave her a hug. "Yeah. Alhamdullilah." I love how she is always looking out for me and caring for me every day at every moment. Now I understand how important mothers are in Islam. Masha'allah.
She hugged me back. "Zarina, you don't know how capable some people can be in combat or defense until they actually show you. I just hope that this can help you at least in some way if this were to happen again. And I REALLY hope nothing like that happens again."
"Me too," I take the small spray and put it in my jacket pocket. "I'll put it somewhere safe later."
"I personally tied a string through the keychain loop so you could wear it as a necklace under your hijab."
"That's an awesome idea!" I grabbed the small object out of my pocket and put it on over my head. This way, I can always know I have it with me and nobody can know about it or steal it from me! I fixed my hijab a bit so the pepper spray was now concealed under my scarf. Speaking of later, I have to go to school now so I'll see you later!" I let go from the hug and put on my jacket and backpack. "Asalamu Alaykum!" I give her another hug. "Thanks, mum. For everything." I said more quietly.
