❦ Evangeline ❦

Birthdays are meant to be fun. You should have big parties and enjoy time with family and friends. Not have your parents tell you you're getting put into Havenwood. The horrible place you go when your rich parents say that you're not good enough to be in the family. On your twelfth birthday, you are meant to know what you want to be and how you will bring money into the family. Money is the only thing most wealthy parents in Crystal Springs care about.

We only have until the end of the day to decide. If we don't the next day we're being sent to Havenwood. No hugs goodbye. No, we're going to miss you. Just disappointed looks from the two people you thought loved you the most.

And the thing is, this only happens to the secondborns in the family.

Firstborns aren't pressured into being something they probably don't want to be. They get more time than us. They get a big share of the family money. And they get all of the parent's love.

"Hey, you ready?" I turned around and saw my brother who looked like he had been crying.

Without saying anything I just nodded.

My older brother Issac is the only one in my family that cares about me. He's the only one who doesn't want me to leave.

"It's time for your sister to leave!" My dad yelled from downstairs. There was no sadness in his voice.

Issac helped me get my bags downstairs and into the car. "I promise I'll get you out of that place." I hope he keeps that promise.

"Here I want you to have this," he says pulling a necklace from his pocket. It was identical to the necklace with a silver ring, but the one he gave me was gold. "I had 'best little sister ever' written on the inside." He added as he put it around my neck.

"Thank you," I whispered while hugging him.

"There's no time for hugging let's go now." My dad interrupted.

"Keep your head up and try to make friends. I love you, Eva."

"I love you too," I responded before getting in the car.

My dad drove off quickly. The whole ride was silent. We arrived at this big gated house. The house was pretty for a place filled with unhappy kids.

"Welcome, you must be Evangeline." An old lady walked up to us. "I'm Ms. Carson. I am one of the owners of Havenwood. You'll meet the other ones later. As you can see we are getting quite a few people today." Looking around I saw more kids like me getting dropped off by their parents.

"Your bags are being taken to your room. You can say goodbye to your dad then head there." Ms. Carson handed me a key leaving me and my dad alone.

"I wished you would've chosen something even if you didn't want to do it." Surprised by his words I turned to face him. "I want you to be safe and know I love you even if it doesn't look like it." Liar. "You should get to your room Eva."

"Only Issac can call me that."

He nodded his head and was about to say something. I didn't want to hear anything from him, so I walked out.

....

Room 207.

When I reached the room I noticed two bedrooms. One with all my bags and a girl was sitting down. Who was in her own world. I could see that she had straight dark brown hair with pale skin.

"Hi." I finally said while walking to my side. She looked up and gave me a small smile. "Hi. Are you Evangeline?" I nodded. "What's your name?"

"Clementine Morris." She is from the Morris family. Wow. That's a family every rich kid wants to be a part of. They actually care for each other. "It's nice to meet you, Clementine."

As time went on we got to know each other while unpacking. "Will I everyone report outside." A voice came over the intercom.

Everyone was crowded around outside. Different age groups were here. Sad twelve-year-olds like me, kids between twelve and seventeen, and eighteen-year-olds ready to leave.

Older men and women guided us to the background filled with chairs. "The place is huge," Clementine whispered.

"Find a seat everyone so we can get started." Said someone who looks like Ms. Carson but younger. Me and Clementine agreed to sit together. We found a row that was mostly empty and sat down.

"Are you new I've never seen you before?" The boy I was sitting next to questioned. "Sadly."

"You get used to being here. Here they care more about you than your parents." Yeah right.

"I'm River."

"Evangeline."
