What. The. Fuck.I couldn't think of any other words, not even another single thought other than those three words. All I could do was bring my hand to my mouth.
"What's wrong Elena?" One of the nurses said.
I was having an out of body experience, "nothing, I just wasn't expecting this letter at all."
"Oh I know right? Never trust the mailroom with anything personal I always say. Who sent them anyway if you don't mind me asking?"
"My mother, and sister it seems," I lifted one after the other, "I'm going on break."
I didn't even stop to listen to her response, not that I would've heard, let alone comprehend it right now. I rushed to the break room, it was empty thankfully, I sat in a seat and read the letters over again.
The letters were clearly addressed to me, it didn't seem to be a forgery, but that didn't explain their contents. The dates clearly state they were signed and sent within a few months of each other, my eyes flew from one to the other over and over.
'By the time you get this I will already be gone, and no this is not me 'going manic,' as your sister originally said to you, of which I'm sure she will tell you what really is going on...'
'I know this is going to sound absolutely insane Elena, but what mom was talking about, it's true, and very much real...'
Some things between the two of them matched up, like how they never seemed to be able to reach me after Dad's funeral. It was purposeful, what was going on between the two of them was utterly ridiculous, I didn't realize I would miss something like this.
'Right after me and your father got married, on our honey moon to Inverness... When I went back to Craig Na Dun...'
Time travel, having a 'real' father, my mom being stuck in an entirely different time period before we were born, "insane, absolutely insane," I said to myself, "they're both insane."
'I loved your father, and I've thought long and hard about this decision but, I am returning to then, I have no clue as to if I'll find him or not but I have to try....'
'Mom has already left, she's been gone for a few months now, I tried to call you but still no answer, that's why I'm sending you this. I'm going after her, something happens to mom, I sent a copy with the letter, I have to warn her...'
'With all the love a mother can give, Claire Randall Fraser'
'With love from your dear sister, Brianna Randall'
I felt like my brain was being hit with every weapon known to man at once, these letters ended up at the hospital a month ago, with a return address on them, along with a phone number... "Scotland," I whispered.
Something must be in the water over there. I thought to myself as I turned to the telephone, I groaned, I shouldn't even be humoring this insanity.
I got up and reached for it off the counter stretching the cord to the closest table. I picked up the phone and as soon as I heard the dial tone I laughed to myself. "What am I doing?" I sighed.
First I dialed my mother's telephone, "hello this is Claire Randall, very sorry I cannot come to the phone right now, please leave a brief message."
I laughed again at the tone, "mom, I got your letter," I laughed, "very funny way of trying to get me to speak to you. Even getting Bri in on it, and adding an address from Scotland is a nice touch. As usual, please call me back, I am worried about you being by yourself, and I know now not speaking to you was not right of me. Love you, Elena."
I hung up the phone, taking a long look at the phone, I took a deep breath in standing up, walking to the fridge and grabbing my dinner. A long, long night awaited me.
It was early morning hours and I decided to keep myself preoccupied by opting to quadruple check every patient several times, "alright, it seems baby is doing alright. Please be sure that if you feel that pressure again to call one of us in, it could mean your contractions are starting," I smiled reassuringly.
"Especially since your," I stretched my voice as I looked at my watch, "water broke a few hours ago, stay comfortable, doctor will be in soon to check up."
I left the room walking down the hall, I slowed to look down at my watch, it's should be around when her shift starts.
I'm not being paranoid. Period. I am just concerned that my mother is going through a manic phase, and pulling Brianna in.
I grabbed the phone from behind the nurses station, no one was there so it was the perfect time, I dialed her hospital.
"Hello, how may I help you?" A woman's voice responded.
"Yes I'm looking to speak with a staff member?" My voice stretched.
"Of course, now which staff member are you looking to speak with? I'll be able to connect you."
"Claire Randall."
A few moments passed, flipping pages could be heard along with the woman's breaths, "I'm sorry miss it seems Mrs. Randall resigned a few months ago."
"Is there a reason why?"
"I am sorry but that information is indeed private."
I bit my tongue, "of course thank you for your help."
I hung up the phone, my mind was racing. I hurried to the staff lounge where only two other people were inside, I grabbed the phone quickly and dialed Brianna's home phone.
"Hello, this is Annalise speaking."
"Hey Anna this is Elena, is there any way that I could speak to Brianna really quick? It's important." My voice was shaking.
"Oh... Hey Elena, actually Brianna doesn't live here anymore, at least that's what I've been led to believe after she completely dropped of the face of the earth after going on a trip with her Scottish boy toy. Leaving me with the rent, and having to find a new roomie."
"How long has Bri been gone?"
"I'd say at least four to five months. She did send me a letter apologizing but I personally didn't accept it, and I certainty didn't reply." Her voice was harsh.
"My sister has been out of the country, without one phone call to you, with some strange person, and you didn't think that should ring any bells? Or was it just because an ominous letter was sent to you?" I sighed before she could respond, "I will talk to you later Anna, goodbye."
I hung up the phone, slamming it down, I gripped my face with my hands.
What. The. Fuck.
All the sudden a nurse came in, "Randall, your mom from room 12 is ready to pop."
"What the fuck." I sighed.
