Nightmare - Chapter One

“Mom!” I yelled as I ran through the streets of what used to be my home. “Mom!” I hollered.
I could feel my legs start to go numb as I ran. My breathing was ragged and my hair was falling from its original place in a bun on my head. “Az!” someone screamed, “Azalea!” I ran towards the scream as fast as I could. When I reached where it was coming from it was too late. My mother had been taken from me, just like the rest of my family. Ripped into shreds by the monsters that now owned the world and painted both the world and the ground beneath my mother a bloody red.

I woke up sweating. It was a nightmare. I've been having them a lot lately. I fear that my mother will be taken from me just like my dad and sister had been. My sister was like my best friend. She was my best friend. River was there for me when my parents would argue before this whole apocalypse thing. Which started when I was a little bit younger. I was thirteen when the world fell and people's sanity went with it. Now I am fifteen. She protected me and I couldn’t even protect her. My dad on the other hand was never the best by any means, but he also wasn’t the worst. Yes, he said things that were out of line but he was still my dad.  He died the same day as River. Now I had to protect my mom. I have to keep her alive. She’s all I have left.

My mom is a leader and she’s running this place that I simply do not call home. She’s built walls and kept everyone in the neighborhood here safe. Not many of them could fight. I was one of the few that could. My dad raised me for this; to survive and to keep myself alive. But I had to keep more than myself alive now. This entire town is dependent on me.
When my dad was alive he helped my mom when I was on supply runs. Now I was forced to stay here. I’ve always had thoughts on how to run this place but I never acted on them. My mom ran everything. “If we had a council and people knew what they were doing, this place would be a sanctuary.” I’d told my mother many times but she never listened.
The town is pretty small but it was a wonderland for anyone who had been out of these walls. We had solar panels that powered everything, we had running water, an infirmary, food and plenty of space for farming that no one thought to use.
I’ve told my mom that we need to use the space for farming but she always shut me down because we don’t have enough people who know how to do anything the right way. I know she has plans for this place's future. The same plans I do, but she couldn’t act on them until we had more people.

After I got dressed I went downstairs to the kitchen and found a note from my mom, “I’ve decided to go through with your plan. If this place is going to have a future there has to be more people out there that can help. We need to train people in how to fight. I need you to go to the armory. I promised you when you were younger on Halloween the day everything faltered that everything would be ok. Even when the monsters were chasing us. I promised we would make it out alive, and we will continue to survive along with these people if we find fighters. Fighters like you and Valencia.”  I knew she was right. I thought the same thing. I then went to the armory.
