You stood in line at the local coffee shop, squinting your eyes slightly at the menu as you decided what to get.

There were three people in front of you. An elderly couple taking their sweet time ordering, and a boy who looked around your age.

You could see his brown hair peeking out from behind his hat. His back was turned to you and he was looking down at his phone, so you couldn't make out any features.

Before you could even try to, a loud thud interrupted your thoughts. You looked down, seeing your phone, screen up, on the floor right in front of the boy.

You cringed as you drew the attention of many people in the shop. As you leaned down to get it, the boy did it for you.

He smiled at your lock screen, which was you and  your dog in matching pyjamas. The second he made eye contact with you his smile fell and his jaw dropped slightly open.

You had a similar reaction when you looked at his bright blue eyes, the colour of them being enhanced by the sunlight shining in.

The two of you stayed in the state of shock before someone behind you cleared their throat, snapping you out of it.

He quickly handed you your phone, turning his body to walk towards the register.

You didn't know what to do. Do you thank him for the kind gesture, or do you just go on about your day?

Obviously you couldn't just let it go. You couldn't give it another thought before you heard him speak.

"Shit." He mumbled, patting himself down. "Do you guys take Apple Pay?"

The cashier shook her head apologetically, causing him to sigh. "Just cancel it, please. Sorry."

You saw this as not only an opportunity to not only do something nice, but also a chance to spark a conversation with him.

Taking a step forward, you gently placed your hand on his forearm. "I got it." You turned to face the cashier with a smile, "Could you add an iced chai latte and a croissant to that, please?"

"Of course! Anything else?" She asked.

You looked at the boy, who, with a slight rosy colour on his face, shook his head. You handed the lady your card before taking it back a few seconds later along with your receipt.

The pair of you stepped to the side to wait for your order.

"Thanks for that. I forget not every place takes mobile payments." He said, awkwardly scratching the back of his neck.

You laughed, "Don't even worry about it! The amount of times I've forgotten my wallet is beyond me."

He shared your laugh, clearly feeling more comfortable. "Well, I have to pay you back. Could I get your number?"

"No way. No need to pay me back."

His face faltered, before a grin appeared on his face and he handed you his phone anyway. "Well if that's the case, could I get your number anyway?"

You smiled and took the phone out of his hand, typing in your information before handing it back to him.

He didn't get the chance to introduce himself before the barista called out your name. You couldn't help but smile to yourself as you turned away from him and walked towards the counter.

"Y/N." He mumbled to himself before following behind you.

You unknowingly let him follow you to a table in the corner, dimly lit by a few lamps and fairy lights.

It was then that he realized that you hadn't invited him to sit with you, so he stood there awkwardly, shifting back and forth on his feet as he wondered what the right thing to do in this situation would be.

You didn't give him the chance to think about it as you sat down and looked up at him, your eyes signalling to him to sit down in the chair in front of you.

He didn't hesitate to sit his ass down.

There was a comfortable yet awkward silence as you pulled out your laptop and notebooks out of your bag.

"Jack." He blurted out. "I'm Jack."

"Nice to meet you, Jack." You replied, trying to hold back your laugh at his abruptness.

He smiled awkwardly, "Thanks again. For the food."

You smiled back, "Thanks for picking up my phone."

The two of you held eye contact, cheesy smiles covering your faces. You would've stayed like that for who know how long if his phone didn't vibrate against the table, disturbing the moment.

He reluctantly looked down, his smile turning into a frown. He pulled something out of his pocket before meeting your eyes again.

He took your hand, palm up, and held it against yours. "I've got a practice to go to, but I'll text you."

"Looking forward to it." You smiled.

Returning it one last time, he closed your hand and stood up. As he walked out, you opened your palm to find a 20 dollar bill in it.

It took you a second to process it, but once you did, you couldn't help but feel a warm feeling in your stomach.
