LORELEI SAT IN HER JEEP.. Her heart pounding with a mix of trepidation and anticipation. She had finally mustered the courage to visit her estranged parents, Richard and Emily, at their imposing residence.
As she stepped onto the porch and knocked on the heavy wooden door, she felt a surge of both longing and unease. The door swung open, revealing her mother, Emily, whose elegant features were etched with a mixture of surprise and curiosity.

"Hi, Mom," Lorelei said, her voice slightly trembling.

"Lorelai, my goodness, this is a surprise," Emily replied, her tone a polite but distant formality. "Is it Easter already?"

 "Is it Easter already?"

"No, I just... finished up my business class and I thought I would stop by," Lorelei explained, her mind racing.

*To see me?" Emily asked, her eyebrows raised.

"Yes," Lorelei said, her gaze meeting her mother's.

"The place looks great," Lorelei said, trying to break the awkward silence.

"It hasn't changed," Emily replied flatly.

'Well, there you go,' Lorelei said, her voice strained. 'How are the girls at the bridge club?'

'Old,' Emily said, her lips pursed.

'Well... good,' Lorelei said, her voice trailing off.

They settled into their seats opposite each other, the tension between them palpable. Emily broke the silence by asking about Lorelei's business class. Lorelei explained that she had been attending twice a week, saying how she must of told her, Richard had entered the room, also himself don't know she was doing a business class.
After a long and uncomfortable pause, Lorelei took a deep breath and said,

"I came here for a reason. Dad, would you mind sitting down for a minute?"

Richard , his expression stern. 'You need money,' he said, without preamble.

'I have a situation,' Lorelei said, trying to avoid a direct confrontation.

'You need money,' Richard repeated.

'Dad, will you just please let me get this out, okay?' Lorelei said, her patience wearing thin. 'Um, Rory has been accepted to Chilton.'

Emily's eyes widened. 'Just Rory?' she asked. 'Did Tori not get in?'

'No, there was only one spot,' Lorelei explained.

Richard and Emily exchanged a knowing glance.

'I see,' Emily said, her voice tinged with disappointment. 'Well, that's wonderful news for Rory.'

'Yeah, it is"Lorelei said, her voice heavy. Richard and Emily exchanged a knowing glance. The weight of their judgment hung heavily in the air. "She can start as early as Monday. Um, the problem is that they want me to put down an enrollment fee plus the first semester's tuition, and I have to do that immediately or she loses her spot."
