"Hey, um, Perr?" LaFontaine muttered nervously, fidgeting with their shirt sleeves. "Can I talk to you?" "Sure, Susan," responded Perry, who was dusting. "Well, um, actually never mind. You seem busy." Perry set her cleaning supplies down, and joined her anxious roommate on their bed. "No, I'm not. What do you want to tell me?" "Well, uh, remember how when we were kids, how much I hated wearing feminine clothes and being referred to as a girl? But also didn't really want to be a boy, either?" The nervous ginger inquired.

"Yeah, I do. Infuriated your mother to no end when you wouldn't wear" Perry remembered. LaFontaine hesitated, then went on. "Well, I've been doing some research, and I found a word for people who feel like that: nonbinary. And some nonbinary people prefer gender neutral names and pronouns," LaF finished, not daring to look at Perry. Suddenly, they felt Perry's arm around their shoulders, squeezing them tenderly.

"And would you like a gender neutral name?" LaF nodded. "LaFontaine." "OK, LaFontaine. I don't care what pronouns and name you use, you are still my best friend," Perry said warmly, wrapping her arms around LaF.
