CHAPTER THREE:
first late

"are you kidding me? thalia, you're talking to your mother. all of you in the car now." she shouted, unlocking the car doors.

noah, y/n, and thalia sat in the backseats wondering how they were going to complete their bucket list after this. thalia shut her eyes and laid back before falling asleep. y/n stayed silent and rested her head on noah's. thalia's mom kept her narrowed eyes on the road. was she speeding?

"you and joão?" noah whispered and poked y/n's arm. "i thought you hated him."

"what?"

"you always talk about how he asks you for homework all the time or steals your pencils." noah replied.

"it's annoying but i don't hate him." y/n whispered back.

"i'm surprised lydia hasn't said anything. she thinks joão wants her, i feel bad."

"she saw us in the bathroom." y/n admitted.

noah gasped out loud and quickly covered her mouth. she whisper-yelled, "what the fuck? what did she say?"

"she started freaking out and i was too tired to deal with it. i left and found you," y/n explained, "nothing happened between him and i, just kisses."

"this friday is senior night so, someone is having an after party. what do you think?" noah mentioned. "we can go after the senior boy's soccer game."

"sounds-"

"none of y'all are going to a party after today, especially thalia. i'm telling both of your mothers what happened." thalia's mom interrupted, she was pulling over in front of y/n's house.

"we're so sorry, miss. thalia left us and went on her own," y/n tried to calm her down. "we can't control her."

thalia's mom didn't respond. she only waited for noah and y/n to get out.

"goodbye," they both said before closing the car door. the two girls walked inside the house until noah's phone received a loud text.

noah stopped in her tracks and her brows furrowed.

"what?" y/n looked at her.

"lydia has gone crazy. she's flipping tables and spreading rumors, rumors about you." noah replied
with an expression full of fear. "she's thinking of telling the principal."

"telling him what? the party wasn't on school grounds!" y/n panicked.

"i don't know!"

.・゜゜・ ・゜゜・.

y/n bit her nails as she walked towards the main entrance of the high school. everyone seemed normal: no one stared at her, she received waves and smiles. thalia or noah weren't seen anywhere near y/n's locker either. usually, the two girls met up at y/n's locker before heading to class.

y/n opened up her locker and grabbed her math textbook before checking herself in the mirror.
on the inside of her locker door she glued photo booth pictures with her friends and a mirror.

"you are sick in the head!" someone yelled.

y/n ignored, physical fights weren't normal but arguments were.

"if you didn't cheat on me with y/n, none of this would've happened! you did this to yourself!" a female voice yelled back.

y/n's heart dropped. are you kidding me? the drama was brought into the school and it can get y/n in trouble. how was she going to keep her role as class president if she's involved in drama?

y/n put her backpack away and shut the locker door. her legs began moving towards her class but that's exactly where the yelling came from. everyone watched from afar, too afraid to step close.

"nothing happened!" joão rolled his eyes. he caught y/n's eye and frowned.

lydia followed his gaze and turned to y/n. she was holding an empty cup of coffee with the lid gone.

y/n gasped, looking at joão twice: the coffee was all over his shirt and floor.

"look what you did, slut." lydia threw the cup at y/n before pushing her and walking to class.

"we can talk about this after class, okay?" y/n scanned joão's white, now brown shirt.

"there's nothing to talk about." he dryly responded.

"what? there's obviously a lot to talk about." y/n stood up straight, ready to defend herself.

"no, there isn't. i don't know what you're talking about."

"joão, stop it, you know exactly what i'm talking about. about last night." y/n approached him.

"all we did was... kiss. that's all. you should stay away."

the first bell rings sending everyone off to their classes. y/n had ten minutes left before she was counted as late.

"you're going to take her side?" y/n couldn't believe what was happening. joão and y/n weren't dating but neither were lydia and him. lydia spilled a hot drink on him and he still defended her?

"it's much easier," joão shrugged and walked away.

y/n pulled him by the arm the same way he pulled hers at the party. she glared into his eyes and whispered, "if i lose everything i have at this school because of you or her, i'll ruin you."

joão stared at her for a few seconds and started laughing. "you're just as weird as her."

"i'm serious, joão! she can ruin my future that i've worked so hard for." she almost cried out. "you don't understand at all."

joão dropped his arm away from her, "i have my own future to worry about."

"you have a full ride scholarship! you have nothing to worry about." y/n pointed at him. "i don't!"

joão groaned, "you're giving me a headache."

"and you're giving me a panic attack. my parents will kill me if i don't make it to yale because of stupid drama."

"yale?" joão chuckled, looking her up and down. his chuckled slowly turned into a competitive expression. he repeated, this time much slower, "yale? you know, only one person from this school gets in, right?"

"miss l/n, what are we doing out in the halls?" one of the school staff appeared behind her. y/n stumbled upon her words and glanced at the lady in front of her.

"i was just discussing some personal matter with-" y/n was about to point at joão who was behind her but he was gone. y/n's voice trailed off. "with..."

"with?"

"he was here but-"

"save it for later. you're more than ten minutes late to class. a big fat one won't look great on that record, won't it?"

"no, it won't." y/n clenched her fingers around her math textbook. "i'm sorry."

"let it be the last time, miss."

"it will." y/n nodded. "i'm sorry."
