Crackling.
Ennet cannot see anything, but he hears a distinct crackling.
He gently opens his eyes. He awakes to find himself in his classroom. He sits on the front row, a familiar breeze blowing right next to him.
"Was I asleep?" He thinks to himself as he scrambles to get a grasp of the situation.
He squints to see his teacher's blurry face, their voice is muffled, and he can't figure out what subject he's on. His book stands on front of him covering him as he slept. He tries to read the contents of the book, but none of the words are entering into his mind.
"What the..."
Then suddenly hears a voice calling to him.
"...net... en.... Ennet. Answer this question."
It's the teacher, he can hear them now. He staggers out a yes.
"Arrange the following by level of blood pressure: Capillaries, Venules, Arteries, Veins, and Arterioles."
He looks over at the book, everything is clear now. Its biology.
The book is nowhere near the topic he's being asked about, its still talking about the musculoskeletal system. He looks over at the board for any clue, but all thats written are scribbles.
"What..." he thinks to himself again.
The crackling sound comes back, now louder.
He looks over at the teacher, she has a blank face.
"What's your answer?"
He sees a faint silhouette by the door of the classroom. A girl is looking at him.
The crackling grows louder.
He cant make out her face. Just that her hair is red, and there is an aura about her presence. It burns.
The crackling grows stronger.
"Ennet. What's your answer." The teacher says with more urgency.
"Im not sure." Ennet says out loud. The word echoes through the whole room.
The crackling grows stronger.
Then suddenly Ennet hears a snap in his mind.
"From ascending order... Arteries, Arterioles, Capillaries, Venules, Veins."
The teacher finally makes a face. Her eyebrows raise, her eyes squint and mouth distorts to a smile.
"That is the correct answer! Nobody else in this class has answered that correctly! Good job as always Ennet!"
The class erupts into applause. The applause grows so loud he can no longer hear the crackling.
Ennet turns to the class. There are no students but him.
He turns to the teacher. There is no teacher.
The room is on fire, but it doesn't burn.
He looks at the door. He could barely see the girl run away.
Ennet quickly scrambles to chase after the girl.
He trips at the tables, slips as the floor, struggles to open the door that was already opened to begin with.
When he finally exits the room, he hears a faint voice.
"Goodbye Ennet."
Ennet wakes up. No sweat. No ruffling on his bed. Everything is in order.
The clock strikes 5:30. His alarm rings.
"What the fuck..."
Ennet swears for the first time.
