Winter always told himself that he loved his Job. But most days he questioned whether that was actually the case. He knew that if he got One pound for every stupid question or request a parent gave him or another nursery worker. They would all be richer than Rodger Knight. But they don't make extra money from it. Instead they have to put up with certain parent's mixing up 'Knight' and 'Night'. Which has grown to be a common occurrence.
"Winter!" A familiar voice shouted from across the room.
"Oh no." He muttered under his breath realising which parent it is.
"Winter. I'm having a girls night out tomorrow..." The mother began, as Winter's face grew increasingly more infuriated. "Can I leave little Benjamin here over night?"
"Uhh... Celia, why would we have been able to do that in the first place?"
"Because this is the Night Nursery."
"It's Knight with a K..." Winter replied, trying to figure out how he was supposed to get through to this parent.
"No but it's daytime right now..."
"I can't do this..." Winter whispered as he glanced around the room. Much to his luck Autumn was in the same room. "Celia, can you give me a moment?"
He quickly walked over to where Autumn was stood, "Uh Autumn..." He asked, as he stood infront of her.
"Yes... Winter?" Autumn replied as she gave him a confused look.
"Uhh." Winter began, when his mind blanked out. "Can you speak to this parent please... She uhh... thinks we are a Night Nursery again..."
"Okay. Winter are you okay? You uhh seem a bit... off." Autumn replied feeling concerned about her colleague. Wait why am i even concerned...
"Celia?" Autumn said quietly with her classic unimpressed look. "What kind of Nursery do you think this is?"
"A night Nursery"
"Celia the thing is we are actually 'The Knight Nursery' with a K. And we have explained this to you countless times. We are not a daycare, or a baby sitter. Please stop repeatedly annoying Winter with the same question, it's frustrating for him, and quite frankly he is one of the best and most loved here, so he does not deserve this. Understood."
"Sorry Autumn. Sorry Winter. " Celia replied as she left the nursery with a scared look across his face.
Autumn glanced back in the direction of Winter, noticing how he had a shocked facial expression. "What?" She asked, confused at why he could look so shocked.
"You think I'm one of the best people here?" He asked her, with a smile across his face. She glanced towards him with a week smile across her face as she began to turn away.
"Do not tell anyone i said that." Autumn muttered. Ugh. Did that really just happen? She thought herself, as she was trying to stop herself from smiling. WHY ARE YOU SMILING AUTUMN? Part of her felt concerned to why she was losing control of the mask she had built up over the years.
She didn't want people to realise how soft she actually was.
As she opened her and Marjorie's office door part of her felt relieved Marjorie wasn't in. She quickly sat down on her chair, beginning to catch up on missed emails. But she found herself still smiling over her interaction with Winter...
"WHAT THE FU-" Marjorie exclaimed as she quickly closed the door.
"What?" Autumn asked, confused about the sudden outburst.
"Why are you - Autumn Knight - the person who never shows her emotions now suddenly very bubbly and smiling."
"I'm not..." Autumn replied trying to think of a response.
"Is it to do with Winter?" Marjorie asked, smirking towards Autumn.
"Why would Winter be the reason I'm smiling? Maybe I'm just in a good mood..."
"Well considering Winter was also a bit... smiley?" Marjorie replied, as Autumn gave her yet another unimpressed look.
"Trust me it was nothing"
"Okay..." Marjorie replied, discretely facepalming at Autumn.
--- THAT NIGHT ---
Autumn was used to not being able to sleep at night. Especially with the memory of her parents arguing late into the night lingering throughout her head, with her older brother bringing her into his room to help keep her calm and letting her use his headphones to drown out the noise. She just didn't realise that 20-30 years later that would still affect her. Yes she lived on her own. There was no body else in her house who can argue. But it still would worry her.
But this time was different. She felt different... the way Winter smiled at her... it made her feel happy? But she knew that no matter how she felt, she was unlovable or unlikable.
There was also prom night where her crush Kyle Killerman asked her to prom. Only for her brother to reveal that he faked it all, carrying a bouquet of dead roses.
She never dated anyone since that night. After knowing how one crush can ruin everything.
This situation with Winter was different but would have still hurt. Everyone in this nursery is terrified of her, they would never really want to be that close. She's seen this at all the parties they throw.
Where after an hour she hides out in a stairwell, or the bathrooms, or just goes home. Because everyone is too scared to interact with her.
But with another gala coming up days away, she considered just sitting it out.
Why would Winter want to spend his time with her at a party with people he's closer with...
Do I really like Winter like that? She asked herself, finding it a bit frustrating. The thoughts of whether or not she actually liked Winter annoyed her knowing that he would never feel the same. Yes Winter is an amazing person, all the staff thinks he's amazing, most the parents do and all the kids do. Everyone just does apart from the odd irrational parent. And yes she truly felt safe around him. Unlike everyone else she didn't feel like she was in a constant state of danger. There had been a few times where someone hugged her, and she panicked injuring their arm. She didn't feel like that with Winter. She felt like she could be safe, that she didn't have to worry about having to fight for her self and she felt that... oh.
"WHYYYYY!" She accidentally shouted realising that she actually had a crush on him.
