"HEY, JÜ! VIRGIE! OVER HERE!" a voice called them over to the bar, trying to be heard over the loud, live music blasting through hamburg's kaiserkeller club.
virginia carter held onto her boyfriend's hand, as if for dear life, as they were pushed around by the excited crowd. she would be lying if she said she were completely in her element at the moment— in fact she was the furthest thing from it. if it weren't for her firm hold on her boyfriend, she would've lost herself in the sea of sweaty, drunk germans of the kaiserkeller. she didn't usually hang around this area of hamburg, what with all the gangs and prostitutes hanging around, and it seemed like her mental image of it hadn't been far from the truth.
after weeks of never shutting up about this one band playing at the indra club, her friends had finally managed to convince her to go see them perform live. the kaiserkeller, although owned by the same man, was much more popular and less shabby than the indra where they had previously worked. it wasn't until they had done the switch that virginia had agreed to give up a night to go see them.
"did we miss much?" jürgen vollmer asked once they had made it to the bar, addressing a couple who had arrived before them— astrid kirchherr and her own boyfriend, klaus voormann, were the second half of their friend group. although the three of them had all been friends long before virginia came along, jürgen, who she'd met through uni, had insisted on introducing her to his friends once they'd started dating and she had immediately formed a connection with them.
in these sort of clubs, each individual song lasted about twenty minutes, and so although virginia and jürgen had been the last to arrive, they really hadn't missed much. "no they haven't even finished the first one." astrid kirchherr was one of the prettiest, if not the prettiest woman virginia had ever met. with her sharp bangs and beautiful eyes, everything about her oozed confidence and genius. all heads, girls and boys alike, would turn when she walked by and they were all left stunned by astrid and her charming, boyish hair and piercing gaze.
"well, i'm glad you guys made it, especially you. i can't believe this is your first time seeing the beatles!" klaus voormann really did seem like the perfect match for astrid. both were incredibly gifted artistically and were constantly introducing each other to new subcultures and ideologies. they were always bouncing ideas off of each other, their personalities complementing each other almost perfectly.
"and i can't believe you guys come here every night!" virginia shouted over the music. "i'm pretty sure i saw a couple fucking out by the entrance!" although virginia had never really known luxury personally, hamburg's rough and dirty atmosphere had still come as a big shock to her. she hadn't really heard much about the city before taking her exchange trip, and if she had known what she knew now, she probably would've gone to london or paris instead. yet that didn't mean she regretted her choice— only that the younger version of her was easier to scare off.
astrid grinned. "you get used to it after awhile. say, can i get you a beer?" taking a glance at her surroundings, virginia quickly decided she didn't want to get drunk in such a place. "no thanks, i'll pass." she chuckled, shrugging off her coat with her boyfriend's help and sitting down on a stool between him and astrid.
from their seats by the bar, they could see the boys on stage without having to mingle with the sweaty and troublesome crowd in the center of the club, and only now did virginia finally take the time to get a good look at them.
