"How was it?" Riven asks me when I storm past him in the courtyard, eager to find June at the library to vent."Bloody brilliant." I yell but in doing so, tears escape my eyes.
Riven grabs my arm to stop me and face him.
"Why do you care?" I yell. "You escaped the list anyway."
"I couldn't make it to the list." He replies. "I'm not going to Polaris anymore."
I'm speechless. My life is hell right now. Everyday a new of load of shit gets dumped on me and others escape the tiniest drop of rain.
"I wanted to tell you yesterday, after the debrief. I asked Silv—"
"Thanks for letting me know." I cut before more tears run down my face. Riven was the most familiar face I would have had in Polaris, except for Silva who wasn't an ally right now. But in fact, Riven or a perfect stranger, it actually means the same. If I want to survive, I will have to rely on myself only, which says a lot about my chances of making out alive.
I pass around him and head to the Fairies Hall's front door.
"You're pissed." He says, following on my heels. "Gus—"
"I just wish I have the same control over my life as you do. But they will never let me change location."
"Gus—"
"You heard Selvarajah last night, no change possible for me, for whatever reasons... It's fine. Completely fine. I can't wait!"
I start to loose it when he says: "I can't go back home, Gus!"
I stop in my tracks and turn to face him. A sad look is printed on his usually cheeky face.
"Home? You're from Polaris?" I ask, my voice barely a whisper now that my anger somehow vanished. He nods and I can see his jaw tightening. "I didn't know people could be from there. I thought it was only prisons and ice and more prisons and more ice..."
"There is nothing else." He admits with a sad smile.
I study his face, trying to make sense of it all. Why is he telling me that is a big mystery, but what shocks me most is that he honestly fells sorry for abandoning me on the Polaris expedition.
"Why can't you go back? Did you escape from jail?" I try with a hint of humor.
"Pretty much." He says. "Both my parents are still in one."
"You grew up in custody." I realize and I bit my tongue for being so insensitive. I get buckets of shit dumped on me everyday, but some are born in pools of it...
"If I go there and I see them, I won't... I really wished you could stay here too. I don't wish Polaris on anyone..."
My shoulders drop because I can see he is honest.
"I don't even know why they are sending soldiers there." He continues. "Blood witches don't have any interest in Polaris. No fairy is kept there, only assassins and thefts..."
Which one are his parents? It's not my business, I remind myself.
"Yet they are sending Silva..." I confess my doubt like I did to June this morning.
"Something is up." Riven agrees. "And you have the right to know what it is before getting there."
My thoughts exactly.
"I want to help you." He says.
"Don't pity me." I snarl.
"I don't. Not to brag or anything, but I'm kind of a golden asset to solve this mystery. Don't you want to know?"
