Mike starred at Hannah as she muttered this. He took this in for a minute and then looked back at the gurney. There he was. Mike then ran to catch up with the nurses and medics taking Forstell further into the hospital.

"How is he?" Mike was full of questions but tried to get the facts right first.

"I'm sorry sir but you need to get out of our way. We're taking him straight to surgery. We can tell you more when we've started." The nurse pushed Mike back a bit as they disappeared through a couple of sliding doors.

Mike ran his hand over his sweaty brow. He cursed under his breath but then remembered. He turned round to find Hannah staring down at her hands which were covered in blood. He could see everyone whispering behind their hands and rumours would be running around the hospital in minutes. Mike took hold of Hannah by her shoulder and led her away of peering eyes.

The car carrying Emily and the children sped as fast as it could along the back roads of DC. Emily was gripping onto the seat for dear life on each corner as she felt like she was going to get flung out of the door at any moment! She felt like saying something to the driver about it but thought better of it. They knew what they were doing. They then came screeching to a halt just as quickly as they had started. Emily was thrown forward nearly snapping her seatbelt in the process! Her hair was a mess as she sat up straight again. Leo jumped awake feeling the very sudden stop.

"We're here miss." The driver called through to Emily as she was trying right her hair and suit again.

"Thank you Rowan." Emily sighed rolling her eyes in Leo's direction which made Leo chuff in laughter. "Can you wait here for us?"

"I don't think I can. I might have to come back round to pick you up when needed." Rowan groaned looking at the amount of space he would have to park.

"Thanks anyway. Come on you two." Emily shuffled Leo and Penny out of the car, always aware that there might be a reporter waiting for them.

Leo picked up his sister in his arms as she still, remarkably, asleep. He put the hood of his jumper over his head so he had a bit of privacy from any cameras they might face. Rowan watched after them to make sure they got away safely and then went to go and see if he could find anywhere to pull over and wait for the family to return.

Alex paced the waiting room. She hated hospitals! They just never meant a good thing, well apart from when Leo and Penny were born. Oh Leo and Penny! She had let them slip her mind. This would tear them apart! Not to mention Trey too! She buried her head in her hands, trying to keep a positive outlook. There was a sudden knock on the door which tore those thoughts from her mind.

"Come....... Come in..." Alex gulped down her tears and tried to keep her voice from wavering.

"Mummy!" She heard her daughter shout as she ran into the room. Alex scooped up Penny as soon as she came in.

"Oh my darling." Alex could feel her shaking so she tried to keep herself from giving off anything to worry her.

Alex looked up to see Leo and Emily also walking in. Leo was staring at the floor, not even making any eye contact. Emily was rubbing his back in comfort. He sat down in the nearest chair and began to tap his foot. Alex carefully set Penny down next to him and kneeled down in front of them both, holding their hands.

"How's daddy?" Penny managed to say, breathing very heavily to try and calm down a little.

"I don't know yet sweetheart. The doctors haven't come in and said anything just yet but I'm sure they'll be here soon." Alex nodded her head hearing a little sigh from Emily when she said this.

"Why?" Leo pipped up. "What are they keeping from us? Surely they should know something by now!"

"Leo we'll just have to be patient. I'm sure they're doing their best to get some news to us." Alex kept her cool when saying this, knowing how Leo was pushing her buttons.

Leo didn't say anything else after this. Alex smiled again at Penny before kissing her on the head and walking over to Emily.

"I need to call Trey. Could you keep an eye on these two? I know I'm probably be asking a lot tonight but...." Alex started to say.

"You don't have to worry Alex. Trey will want to know about this. Where is he anyway? I thought he was supposed to be in DC for a few days."

"He was but he got a call from a friend who needed a favour and you know what Trey's like." Alex chuckled thinking back to the conversation Trey had, had with her for an excuse.

"What both of them are like." Emily chuckled knowing exactly what Alex was talking about.

"I won't be long. I'm sure I'll get a few words out of Trey and then he'll be rushing over here before you can say 'Washington'."

Alex checked back once again on her children. She hated leaving them at this time but knew they would certainly like Trey being there especially Leo. She winked at Emily before stepping out of the room. Emily slumped down into the chair before daring to look at her phone again. Several missed messages. Most of them from Aaron and Seth. Even one from Lyor and Kendra who were on a little holiday together. How she wished they were both here right now.

0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

Alex finally found a quiet space away from all the commotion of the press and the sirens continually going on. She looked through her phone for Trey's number. It had been going off like mad since the news of the shooting had broken. Nothing from anyone that mattered though. She finally found Trey's number and called him. It didn't ring for very long. There was a slight pause before someone spoke.

"Hello."

"Trey, it's Alex." Alex had never been so relieved to hear Trey's voice.

"Hey Alex. What are you doing calling at this time of night?! Tom keeping you up with going through more speeches?" Trey sounded as cheery as ever.

"Trey listen. You might hear this over the news but I wanted you to hear it from me first." Alex had to interrupt him.

"Okay. What's going on? You sound really serious."

"Something happened tonight..... I don't know how to put this especially over the phone..." Alex kept muttering.

"Alex, what's going on seriously you're scaring me now?"

"It's Tom, Trey. He's been shot." Alex's voice wavered as soon as she said this, hating to have to recall what had happened.

"Yeah right. Pull the other one. I bet Tom's told you to call me to get me to rush back to read Penny a bedtime story or something!" Trey's laugh rebounded through the phone.

"Trey.... I'm being serious here. Turn on the news if you don't believe me."

There was a sudden silence on the other end of the phone.

"Trey.... Are you still there?"

"I'll be right over. Which hospital is he at?"
