"Seth!" He comes out to the porch and sits down next to me. "I finished what you asked for." I hand him a sword. "You better appreciate this." He admires the sword as it reflects the light. "I enchanted it to withstand magic attacks too!" I smile at my work.
"It's the nicest sword I have ever held." He marvels. I place a dark brown bow in his lap next. I pile arrows into the leather holder and hand them to him next. "What do these do?" He asks as he marvels at them.
"The arrows will return to this holder as long as they aren't destroyed." He nods along. "Also, the metal on these won't dull." I add on.
"Mommy!" Josephine runs out of the house with Joseph close behind her. "Joseph scared me and I set the bed on fire!" She cried.
"It's ok, honey." She leads me up to her room and I extinguish the fire and fix the bed. "Are you and Joseph ok?" they both nod. "Alright, then it's ok." I kneel and they give me a hug. I rub their backs.
"Joseph, are you ready to go hunting with me?" Seth enters the room and the little boy lights up. "This will be your first training lesson." He pauses and turns to me. "Uhh..."
"Oh yeah!" A smaller sword flies into my hand and I hand it to Joseph. "This will never break and if you are injured and you are alone it will alert me right away." He rushes me with a big hug and I smile.
"Thank you!" He holds the sword like it's a relic.
"Be safe." I call out to them and they leave. I turn to Josephine. "Are you ready for your training?" The mood shifts entirely.
"Yes." Her voice is strong and she wipes away the last of her tears. I picked her up and led her outside. "Mommy, when they bring back the animals, you want me to show you the magic I used that got me caught, right?"
"Yes." I look at her sadly. "Only so that I can see it and learn it myself. Then I will teach you how to use it and control it, ok?" She nods. I kneel in front of her and hold her hands. "When you feel tired you need to tell me, ok?" She nods again. "Summon fire." I instruct as I step away. I watch her. My magic is about to break through my skin in case something goes wrong. I gasp. I can see the light pink magic flowing through her before it forms as the pink flames in her hands.
"Is this good?" I nod. I could the magic in the flames. This was odd. My journal floats to me and notes are scribbled on the page. In the last week magic has become as easy as breathing to me. It was from the two weeks prior of no sleep and constant magic use. The fact that I could now see the magic in someone else if I have my magic prepared to be released is still shocking. Her hands started to shake.
"Put out the fire." I instruct. She obeys. I give her some water and a small snack. "Again." Again, I see the magic in her body before it even flows out as fire. Fascinating. I look at my hands to see my own magic but can't. Weird. She starts to shake so she puts out the fire. "Good, you lasted ten minutes." I smiled.
"That's so little!" She whines.
"We all have to start somewhere." I rub her back and we sit down on the porch.
"What's in your journal?" She asks curiously.
"It has all of my herbs, pastes, tonics, magic skills, and even the times that I started with when I first started using magic." The page flips to the very first page. The pages were almost completely full. "See, I started at ten minutes too." I point at the number.
"I am just as strong as you were when you first started using magic?" I nod. "So, when I am your age I will be stronger than you are now?"
"Yes, if you practice." Her face lights up with excitement. I summoned a giant flame in my hand. "One day, you will be like me." The fire shifts shapes, a horse, a gecko, a human. "One day, magic will feel like breathing and you will feel like your existence is a threat." I turn a smile to her as she stares in rapt fascination. "Just being a witch is not enough. You need to master your magic. It is your magic. You are not the magic's. Do you understand?"
"Yes, mommy." She fidgets and glances at me occasionally. "Can you teach me how to make all those herbal pastes you make?"
"Huh?"
"I want to learn too." She looks up at me with so much hope in her eyes. "I think it's amazing that you can make all of these things!"
"Alright."
"Really?!" She jumps up to her feet and I nod. "I'm going to become a herb master!"
"Yes you are!"
