I woke up feeling groggy, the room around me slowly coming into focus. The bright fluorescent lights overhead made me squint, and I blinked several times to clear my vision. As the haze lifted, I realized I was lying on a cot in the nurse's office. A cool, damp cloth rested on my forehead, and I could hear the faint hum of conversation nearby.

"Alex? Can you hear me?"

I turned my head slightly and saw the nurse standing beside me, her kind eyes filled with concern. Miss Nordy was there too, her expression tense but relieved.

"Yeah, I can hear you," I croaked, my throat dry.

The nurse handed me a small cup of water, and I sipped it gratefully. "You gave us quite a scare," she said gently. "You passed out from a high fever. We called your mom again, she says she's almost here."

There it was again. That word. Mom. I considered correcting her, but again, I simply ignored it.

I nodded slowly, the events before I passed out flooding back. The fight with Chase, the panic, and then the overwhelming heat. I glanced at Miss Nordy, who was watching me closely.

"You had me worried there, Alex," she said, her voice softening. "How are you feeling now?"

"Better, I think," I replied, though I still felt weak and shaky. "I'm sorry for causing all this trouble."

Miss Nordy shook her head. "You don't need to apologize. You've been through a lot today. It's important to take care of yourself."

I leaned back against the cot, closing my eyes for a moment. The cool cloth on my forehead was soothing, helping to alleviate the lingering fever. The nurse checked my temperature again, nodding in approval.

"Your fever is going down, but you need to rest," she said. "You'll be able to go home soon."

I opened my eyes and gave a small nod. "Thank you."

Minutes later, the door to the nurse's office opened, and Lucy rushed in, her face a mix of worry and relief. She hurried to my side, her eyes scanning my face.

"Alex! Are you okay?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

"I'm okay, Lucy," I reassured her, managing a weak smile. "Just a little feverish."

Lucy turned to the nurse, who explained my condition and that once I got home I needed to rest. Lucy listened intently, nodding along.

I gasped, shooting into a sitting position, "What about soccer? I have practice after school!"

The nurse shook her head vigorously, "Nuh uh, youd probably just pass out again. You're sick, remember?"

I groaned but flopped back down on the cot. *I guess the whole standing up for myself and fighting Chase thing had been pointless.

"Thank you for taking care of him," Lucy said sincerely to Miss Nordy and the nurse.

Miss Nordy smiled warmly. "It's no problem. Alex, take it easy, alright? We'll talk more when you're feeling better."

I nodded, feeling a wave of gratitude towards her. "Thank you, Miss Nordy."

With Lucy's help, I got up from the cot, my legs still a bit unsteady. She wrapped an arm around me, providing support as we made our way out of the nurse's office. The hallways were mostly empty now, the school day nearly over. I leaned on Lucy, feeling a mix of exhaustion and relief.
