"Lucy told me you've been doing well, is anything wrong?"
I scowled, her concern turning my stomach.
If you really cared you would have never let me be blackmailed into working for MI6.
"Someone just shot at Lucy."
She inhaled sharply, "What is her condition?"
"She wasn't hit, but she was in her car and had several cuts from the class."
"Has she been treated?"
"The ambulence should be here soon."
"Good." She paused, "Do you want to go to a safe house?"
I thought about the offer.
"They weren't trying to kill her."
"Why do you thinkg that?"
"She was sitting in her parked car. No snipper would miss that shot. Atleast not completely, but she wasn't even hit by the bullet."
Jones grunted and I could picture her nodding.
"Well if you don't want a safe house, is there anything else you need? If not I'm afraid I have other things to attend to. I'll send funds to cover the hospitle bill."
"I... I want a gun."
A strange sound came through the phone that almost sounded like someone choking, "A... a gun?"
I nodded, despite the fact that she couldn't see me, "Yes Ma'am."
She composed herself, "Why?"
The question was simple, my answer equally so.
"I don't feel safe."
A long, silent moment went by.
"You can't bring it to school. And be careful with it when you're in public, a 15 year old with a gun is very Illegal."
"Deal."
"And..." she continued, "You have to take a training course."
I scoffed, "Mrs. Jones, I know how to shoot a gun!"
She sighed, "Alex, please. It would just... make me feel a lot better about it."
I narrowed my eyes, annoyed. "Fine."
"Great! I'll bring it to you in a week!"
Now it was my time to choke, "Huh?"
Before I could question her further I saw an ambulence turn into the parking lot, the sirens too loud for comfort.
"Well it sounds like you have to get going! Goodbye Alex!"
"Wai—"
The call ended
I groaned, "Damn you." I mumbled, before slipping my phone back into my pocket and running over to the parked ambulence.
Two EMTs jumped out of the back of the ambulence running towards me with a stretcher between them.
"She's inside!" I called and they nodded following me as I jogged towards the house. I threw the door open and saw Lucy breathing heavier than before leaning against Mrs. Waver in the chair next to her.
The EMTs ran over to them, and helped Lucy up onto the strecher, by her shakey movements and fluttering eyes it looked like she was hardly holding onto consiousness. I pinned myself to her side as she was rolled out of the building and towards the ambulance. When we reached it one of them turned to me raising their hand, "If you don't mind me asking, what is your relationship with the patient? Due to her injuries only close relatives can stay with her."
I nodded, my head spinning trying to figure out what exactly I was to Lucy. Finally I paused, coming to a conclusion."I'm her son sir."
The EMT scrunched his eyebrows together, but didn't question it. Instead, they nodded and ushered me into the ambulance alongside Lucy. As I climbed in, I grabbed Lucy's hand, her skin cold and clammy, a stark contrast to the warmth I had always associated with her.
The ambulance doors slammed shut, and the vehicle lurched forward, sirens wailing. I tried to steady my racing thoughts, focusing on Lucy's shallow breaths. I felt a knot tighten in my stomach as I replayed the events of the evening. The gunshots, the shattering glass, the blood—it all seemed surreal, like a twisted nightmare.
"Stay with me, Lucy," I whispered, squeezing her hand. Her eyes fluttered open for a moment, a weak smile tugging at her lips before her eyelids drooped once more.
The EMTs worked swiftly, applying pressure to her wounds and hooking her up to IVs. "She's lost a lot of blood, but we're stabilizing her," one of them said, his voice a mixture of urgency and reassurance.
I nodded absently, my mind wandering back to the shooting. Questioning the shooter's motives and what all of it meant.
The ambulance finally began slowing down, It came to a halt and the back doors flew open. Medical staff were ready, quickly transferring Lucy onto a gurney and rushing her inside. I followed closely, barely aware of my surroundings, my focus solely on Lucy.
A nurse stopped me just outside the emergency room doors. "You'll have to wait here," she said gently. "We need to take her in for immediate treatment."
I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. I watched as Lucy disappeared through the doors, feeling an overwhelming sense of helplessness. I sank into a nearby chair, running his hands through his hair.
Minutes felt like hours as he sat there, replaying the events over and over. I couldn't shake the feeling that this was all his fault. Razim only hurt her to get to me, to show me he could kill Lucy or Don whenever he wanted. If we wanted he could come after me.
"Alex?"
My head shot up looking at Don with shaky eyes. I jumped out of my chair rushing towards him, his face etched with worry. "What happened? Is she okay?"
"They're working on her now," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. And then for the first time ever, I hugged Don. "It was an attack. Someone shot at her while she was in the car. Both bullets missed but she was cut by the glass from the shattered windshield"
Don's grip around me tightened. "Why? Who would do this?"
I stilled, Razim. Razim would do this.
"It's because of me. They are trying to scare me. I... I don't think they were really trying to kill Lucy."
Don placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "We'll figure this out together. Right now, just remember, this isn't your fault."
But it is... everything that has happened is always my fault.

People died because of me
"Alex..." Don chastised in a low voice, "I know what your thinking."
A tear slid down my nose, landing on Don's shirt, "She just can't die." and then another tear fell.
Please not Don.
Please not Mack.
Please not Polly
And god, please, please, please not Lucy.
