CHAPTER THREE

MACKENZIE COOPER WAS WELL known for being fashionably late to anything and everything. most of the time her friends would tell her an earlier time than when she actually needed to be there simply because she'd be there on time at that point. it never annoyed her or made her mad. she'd understood why they all did it. it made complete sense to her, if she were being honest.

she looked at the time on her phone as she slipped her purse over her shoulder and climbed out of the car. 7:59. she was impressed with herself for being on time. as she closed her car door, she made her way towards the entrance of the restaurant, unsure if she was supposed to wait outside for tim or just go in and get the table. after a moment of hesitation, she decided to wait. the time on her phone said 8:01 and a small smile tugged at the corners of her lips because she'd made it on time and he hadn't.

"mackenzie, hi." the blonde looked up to see tim standing frazzled in front of her as he eyed her up and down.

"you're late." she responded, tilting her head slightly. "i should leave your ass here, but it's a free meal, so i'll stay." she spun on her heels and made her way inside with tim trailing behind. she smiled at the hostess, asking about her reservation. once it was confirmed, the hostess grabbed two menus and led them over to a nice table near the back of the restaurant.

tim reached around her to slip her chair out for her. she sat down, thanking him as he made is way across from her and sat down. "so are you going to be a pain in the ass the entire time or is this going to be a civil dinner?"

mack hummed, resting her elbows on the table and her chin on top of her hands, giving him the "eyes" as lucy claims she gives. she says they do things to people and she hates how she can get anything she wants just from giving someone "the eyes". "which would you prefer?"

he opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out as he sat back in his seat and crossed his arms over his chest. a waiter approached the table, asking what they'd like to drink, and once he'd left he leaned forward, resting his arms on the table. "listen, i'm willing to have a civil dinner with you for the sake of lucy thinking she'll be able to wear short sleeves."

"what makes you think she won't be able to wear them?" mackenzie asked, leaning back in her seat as the waiter placed her beer in front of her. they said they needed a few more minutes before they ordered and the waiter only smiled and walked away.

"do you think this date is going to go well?" tim asked.

the blonde smiled, "i do."

tim's eyes searched the girl's face for a moment as he sipped his drink. "how so?"

she sipped her own drink before placing it back down on the table. "is my age really a big deal to you?"

he licked his lips, "not necessarily."

"alright," she gave him a small nod. "neither is yours." there was a small silence. "so, why don't we just have a nice dinner together and try to get to know each other for lucy's sake. you'll never have to see me again after tonight."

"alright." tim gave her a small approving nod. "so, mackenzie-"

"you can call me mack. mackenzie is too formal. i don't like formal."

"really?" tim let out a small laugh. "by the look of that dress i would've never guessed you didn't like it."

mackenzie smiled, wiping gently down the front of her dress. "you like?"

tim couldn't help the small smile that appeared on his face and he used his hand to pretend to wipe at his mouth to hide it as he cleared his throat. "maybe a little, yeah."

"good." she responded before the waiter returned to take their food order. neither of them had really looked at the menu, so they both ordered the first thing they saw that they liked.

tim sipped his beverage, eyes never leaving mack's. "so you obviously know what i do for a living. what do you do?"

mack couldn't hold back her smile. "i own a little cafe. it's not much, but i make good business and i love it."

"wow, that's actually amazing. what cafe?" he questioned.

"just the little one on arrowhead."

he looked away in thought before turning back to her. "i've heard a lot of good things about that place. lucy never even mentioned her best friend was the owner."

mackenzie shrugged, "it's fine. i don't expect her to tell everyone." she smiled, "you'll have to come try the coffee sometime. i'll make sure i'm not around so you don't have to see me again." she joked softly.

tim pursed his lips before a small smile broke out on his lips. "we'll see."

the two conversed for awhile, thanking their waiter once their food arrived. they ate peacefully with light conversation, getting to know each other a little bit more. he really wasn't a bad guy at all. he was actually quite nice and mack would say he made good company. they both didn't even realize that they'd been there for nearly three hours. they'd only noticed when their waiter asked them if they wanted anything before the kitchen closed.

tim paid the bill and the two walked outside. they'd only parked a few spaces away from each other, so he walked her to her car and she turned to him. "thank you for dinner." she started. "i surprisingly had a pretty good time."

"me too." tim stuck his hands in the front pockets of his pants. he bit his tongue, unsure if he wanted to speak again.

"you good?" mack asked. "you look like you've got something else to say."

tim licked his lips, "at the beginning of our dinner you said i'd never have to see you again." there was a small silence as he pulled one of his hands from his pockets and brushed a strand of hair away from mack's face. he shook his head lightly. "what if i want to see you again?"

mack couldn't hide the smile that appeared on her face. "i might be able to make that work."

tim rose an eyebrow, "if?"

the blonde hummed, "if you let lucy wear short sleeves."

he thought about it for a moment before leaning down to press a kiss against mack's cheek. "deal." he took a step backwards and smiled at the girl. "i'll see you soon."

the girl smirked, "are you even going to ask me for my number?"

he only smiled as he approached his own vehicle. "don't worry, i'll get it."

she watched him climb in his car before she got into her own and started the engine, shooting a text to her best friend.

you're welcome.
