"Nevermore was created as a safe haven for our children to learn and to grow, no matter who or what they are." Ms. Weems started. "I realize most of you have heard about the unfortunate incident involving one of our students. But I'm happy to report that Eugene is on the mend and is expected to make a full recovery. So let's focus on the positive and make this Parents' Weekend our very best yet."

"'On the mend'?" Wednesday said. "Try in a coma."

"Have you been to see him?" Enid asked. "You're his friend."

"I'm the reason he's in the hospital."

"That is not your fault, okay? The monster hasn't attacked anyone in the past week. Maybe you finally scared it off."

"Or maybe it went into hiding to avoid this weekend." Wednesday commented as she noticed her family.

Erix, who had been on his phone the entire time texting Tyler (which he'd been doing more often after Eugene got attacked; it was like he felt guilty about something), looked back up at them. "I've gotta go. Ajax and I usually hang out before his family comes."

"What about yours? Busy in hell?"

"My dad is. King responsibilities and all that."

"And your mother?"

"Businesswoman. Hey I'll see you guys later, have fun!"

"Tell Ajax hi from me!" Enid waved.

"You have his number!"

"Jackass." Enid spotted her family in the crowd and groaned. "Would you look at my family?"

The family occupied a large table and howled.

"Talk about toxic pack mentality."

"I give my mom 30 seconds before her judge-y claws come out." she sighed and began walking down the stairs. "Let's get this over with."

Ajax and Erix stood behind the school away from everyone looking at the field.

"Do you think Mrs. Atlas is coming?"

"Probably not. I mean, she and my dad are always working and she just had a huge project to do. You?"

"Uhh they usually come but I don't know about this year."

"We can be alone together."

"I wouldn't be too sure about that." Ajax pointed behind him to a pale woman with light brown hair and blonde highlights. She grinned when she finally saw them.

The woman held her arms out to him.

"How are you, my baby drakon?"

"Mummy?" Erix tilted his head. "What are you doing here? Where's Dad?"

"Ugh. The 'council' has him held hostage. There's still a lot of paperwork to be done so heaven doesn't continue with their plan. And he was so looking forward to seeing you today."

"I sent someone to take care of that months ago. I swear if Jinx messes this up one more time I am going to fire them. Alright well, I'm glad you were able to come."

Erix embraced the tall woman smiling into her shoulder. It was then that he smelled the sweet roses and felt the fiery warmth that only demons gave off.

"Mother." He said almost scolding.

"Yes, my little drakon?"

"Human. Fully human."
