Prologue
I woke up screaming. The terrible but familiar rush of fear flooded my veins and turned my blood cold. I sat in the middle of my bed shaking while I was trying to control my breathing. Breath in, breath out. I could still hear the gunshot ringing in my ears. Breath in, breath out. A feminine scream surrounded me and hung in the air. Breath in, breath out. I could still feel the vibration in my feet caused by a body hitting the floor. I remember this moment like it was yesterday, but it was actually one year ago to this day. That exact moment in time is the reason I live alone, the reason I fear guns, the reason I flinch when someone touches me, and the reason I wake up screaming every night.
