The group huddled together in the dim light of the attic suddenly, a piercing scream cut through the oppressive darkness. "Help! Someone, please help me!" The voice was that of a young girl, desperate and terrified.
The sound sent a jolt of tension through the group, and they exchanged worried glances.
Chris moved cautiously to the window, lifting the edge of the curtain just enough to peer outside.
He scanned the street below and saw a girl running frantically through the snow, her face twisted in fear.
But it wasn't just the girl that caught his attention – shadows moved on the rooftops, pale faces with glowing eyes watching her every move.
"They're using her as bait," Chris whispered, his voice barely audible. "Stay quiet and don't move."
The group held their breath, but Harold, the elderly man, couldn't contain himself. "We can't just leave her out there! We have to help her!"
Chris grabbed Harold's arm, his grip firm. "No, Harold. That's exactly what they want. Look," he pointed subtly towards the roofs. "They are watching. They're waiting for us to come out."
Harold squinted and finally saw the figures perched on the rooftops, their predatory eyes fixed on the girl. He paled, his resolve weakening. "But she's just a child..."
"We can't risk it," Emma said quietly but firmly. "If we go out there, we're all dead. We have to stay put."
The girl's screams grew more desperate, echoing through the empty streets. "Please, somebody help me!"
Chris's heart ached, but he remained resolute. He watched as the girl stumbled and fell, crying out in pain.
She got up, looking around wildly, but no one came to her aid. After what felt like an eternity, she collapsed in the snow, sobbing.
The vampires on the rooftops began to move, slinking down silently and surrounding the girl. One of them, their leader, approached her slowly, a cruel smile on his lips.
"I tried," the girl cried, her voice shaking. "I tried, but they won't come out."
The vampire leader knelt beside her, stroking her hair almost tenderly. "You did well," he said softly. "But you were always just a means to an end. You served your purpose."
The girl's eyes widened in horror as the vampire's words sank in.
She tried to pull away, but the vampire's grip tightened. "No, please," she begged, tears streaming down her face. "I did what you asked. Please don't..."
Her pleas were cut off as the vampire's hand closed around her throat, lifting her effortlessly off the ground.
She struggled, kicking and clawing, but it was futile. The vampire's grip was unyielding.
With a savage motion, the vampire sank his teeth into her neck, tearing at the flesh. The girl's screams turned into gurgles as blood poured from the wound.
The vampire didn't stop there. He ripped into her throat, pulling out tendons and muscle with a sickening crunch. Her body convulsed, her eyes rolling back as the life drained from her.
The other vampires watched, their faces expressionless as their leader savaged the girl. Her struggles weakened, then ceased altogether.
The vampire dropped her lifeless body to the ground, the snow around her stained crimson.
Chris and the others watched in silent horror from the attic, unable to tear their eyes away.
The brutal, senseless violence was a stark reminder of the dangers that lurked outside.
"We have to stay quiet," Chris whispered, his voice trembling. "We can't let them know we're here. We have to survive."
The group nodded, their resolve strengthened by the horrific scene they had just witnessed.
They knew that the darkness outside held unimaginable horrors, and they would need to be vigilant and cautious if they hoped to outlast the nightmare.
