The moon hung low in the sky, casting eerie shadows across the damp alley where Harley Quinn lay. Her tiny frame shivered, both from the cold and the overwhelming sense of abandonment. She clutched her half pink, half blue pacifier tightly, the only remaining symbol of the twisted love she once received from Joker. Tears streamed down her cheeks, mingling with the dirt and grime of the alley floor.
"Why, Daddy?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Why did you leave me?"
The alley was silent, save for the distant hum of the city and the occasional rustle of a rat scurrying by. Harley's mind raced with memories of happier times, of Joker's laughter and the way he used to cradle her in his arms. But those memories now felt like cruel taunts, mocking her for believing in a love that was never real.
Hours passed, and Harley's cries grew softer, her energy waning. She closed her eyes, trying to escape into the safety of sleep, but her dreams were filled with the haunting image of Joker's cold, twisted smile. Each time she drifted off, she was jolted awake by the memory of his betrayal.
As dawn approached, Harley's strength was nearly gone. She lay still, exhausted and defeated, when the sound of footsteps caught her attention. They were faint at first, growing louder as they approached. Panic surged through her, and she tried to curl up tighter, hoping to become invisible.
"Did you hear that?" a voice said, hushed and urgent.
Harley opened her eyes slightly, seeing two figures standing at the entrance of the alley. One was tall and strong, with a determined stance, while the other was slightly shorter, exuding a sense of warmth and compassion.
"Yes," the second voice replied. "It sounded like crying. Over there."
Harley watched through half-lidded eyes as the figures moved closer. Her heart pounded in her chest, fear mixing with a flicker of hope. As they came into focus, she recognized them—Batwoman and her partner, Sophie Moore.
"Oh my god," Sophie breathed, kneeling beside Harley. "She's hurt."
Kate Kane, also known as Batwoman, stood guard, her eyes scanning the alley for any signs of danger. "Be careful, Sophie. This could be a trap."
Sophie gently reached out to Harley, her touch warm and comforting. "It's okay, sweetie. We're here to help you."
Harley's lips quivered as she tried to speak, but no words came. Instead, she clung to her pacifier, her eyes wide with fear and confusion.
Kate stepped closer, her expression softening as she took in Harley's battered appearance. "She's in bad shape," she murmured. "We need to get her out of here."
Sophie nodded, scooping Harley up into her arms. "You're safe now," she whispered, holding Harley close. "We've got you."
Harley's body relaxed slightly in Sophie's embrace, the warmth and kindness in her voice soothing her frayed nerves. For the first time since Joker's betrayal, she felt a glimmer of safety. She nestled closer to Sophie, her small hands clutching at her savior's shirt.
Kate led the way out of the alley, her protective instincts on high alert. They moved quickly through the quiet streets, finally reaching the safety of Kate and Sophie's apartment. Once inside, Sophie carried Harley to the couch, laying her down gently.
"Let's get her cleaned up," Sophie said, grabbing a first aid kit. "And some warm clothes."
Kate nodded, her gaze lingering on Harley. "I'll keep watch. Just in case."
Sophie set to work, cleaning Harley's wounds with careful precision. Each touch was gentle, and she murmured comforting words as she worked. Harley, still clutching her pacifier, watched Sophie with wide, trusting eyes.
"There we go," Sophie said softly, applying the last bandage. "All better."
Harley nodded slightly, her body relaxing further. She reached out, her voice barely a whisper. "Mommie?"
Sophie paused, her eyes filling with emotion. She took Harley's hand in hers, squeezing it gently. "Yes, sweetie. Mommie's here."
Kate watched the interaction, her skepticism slowly melting away. She had always seen Harley as a criminal, but now, seeing her so vulnerable and childlike, her perspective began to shift. She approached the couch, her voice softer than usual. "You're safe now, Harley. We'll take care of you."
Harley's eyes flicked to Kate, then back to Sophie. "Mama?" she asked hesitantly.
Kate's heart clenched at the title. She nodded, crouching down to Harley's level. "Yes, Harley. Mama's here too."
Harley smiled weakly, her eyes closing as exhaustion overtook her. For the first time in what felt like forever, she felt a sense of peace. She drifted off to sleep, her new caregivers watching over her, ready to protect and love her in the way she had always needed.
