Chapter One: The Wind Whistled Through
As the guild master of Fairy Tail looked down from the second floor railing at his destructive brats he couldn't help notice the unusual quiet that permeated the guildhall today. It was strange not to see any of the youngsters causing chaos and destruction, even Natsu and Gray were behaving themselves. Suddenly a mischievous and fun idea entered his mind; it was time to mess with their heads once again. Quickly hurrying into his office he got to work enlisting Master Mavis as a willing accomplice.
A few hours later he made his way back out of his office and over to the second storey railing. Once more he looked out at the crowd and let a secret grin appear. In the time he had been gone more members had appeared while still the guild itself was quiet. Knowing his plans wouldn't get a better chance as even his wayward grandson had turned up and was sitting at the bar; Makarov jumped onto the banister and prepared to cause chaos.
"All right listen up you brats. We'll gonna have us a little competition. As of tomorrow morning nine o'clock sharp there is going to be a treasure hunt all across Magnolia. In teams of two you lot are going hunting for some specific things that when brought back here will give you a new list. For every item and every list you complete the better your prize is. The first team to find all their three lists of items wins the competition."
So far half the guild was looking interested and Makarov knew he would get the rest of them with the rules he had thought up with Mavis' help; whatever you said about the first master she was a sneaky one.
"Here are the catches kiddos, no one is allowed for the next two days to take a job or enter the guild hall unless you're part of the tournament. You can come in and rest between searches, but even Mira and Kinana have to be part of the search so I'm the only one left to serve drinks and take your lists. The only one of you lot excluded from the two person rule is little Asuka if she wants to join."
Makarov watched as that hit them like a ton of bricks. No guild access, no jobs, whatever would some of the lazy bums do. Well he didn't care he wanted chaos and he was going to get it with the next announcement as he could already see certain people joining up and making plans; time to put a spanner in that.
"Team wise, sorry to disappoint you lot but in order to form a team you have to pick a partner you have never been on a quest or challenge with before. What that means for those dumb idiots like Natsu is that people like Elfman and Evergreen can't team up because they partnered for their last S-Class trials. Wendy can't work with Team Natsu because she was on the mission to stop the Oración Seis. The Grand Magic Games also counts so if you were on a either Team A or Team B you can't work with them."
This last rule appeared to cause just the chaos he was looking for as half the guild started complaining and looking round at the other mages confused. Over the years most members had at one point of another teamed up with each other for a specific quest so older guild mates would have a hell of a time finding someone they could partner with. From where he sat Makarov could see Natsu bothering Lucy and she was slowly getting more agitated. Before she could Lucy-kick Natsu through the newly repaired wall Makarov decided to intervene.
"For those still confused for example Natsu can't work with Lucy, Happy, Erza, Gray, Wendy, Carla, Gajeel, Elfman, Lisanna, Mira, Laxus, Juvia, or Macao; as he has been on a mission with all of these members at some time before. This is what I meant, for the dunderheads amongst you to keep it simple pick a team member you have never worked with before in any capacity."
As he watched the confusion finally settle down Makarov finally let his smirk appear as he saw people who had never spoken before start to chat to see if they would make good team mates. While yes he would freely admit he did this for the fun of it he also was a caring guild master who wanted his brats to feel like everyone in fairy tail was their family not just the few that they regularly talked too.
Watching as his own grandson Laxus move about the room he could only think even with the trouble this would no doubt cause it would be worth it to see more friendships and connection develop. The last few years had brought about change which was always good even if it also brought sorrow. Before Lucy turned up Erza was a solitary mage now look at her, on a team and going out on girls' nights. The S-Class trials had shown him that even the antisocial Dragon-Slayer Gajeel could make friends with the shy bookworm Levy not to mention whatever was going on between Evergreen and Elfman.
With one more announcement to make he needed the prop that had taken him and Mavis the last few hours to make. They had needed enough for all of the guild and had to talk to Cana about some of her Card Magic and Freed about the right Rune Magic to set the enchantments up right. Reaching down Makarov picked up the rune bracelet he and Mavis had made. It was a chunky brass bracelet that had a lacrima stone imbedded into the front. Once more getting the guild attention Makarov gave them the last rule.
"Brats last thing. The whole challenge will be done without using any magic. This here bracelet will be given to each of you; it will monitor if you use any magic and appear on a master list that will be set up for the teams. Using magic forfeits an item, three forfeits gets your team disqualified from the tournament no matter if it is just one team member who keeps being an idiot. So be warned people choose your teams well if you want a chance to win."
Makarov figured he would throw the cat among the pigeons with his next remark. Hiding his smirk he glanced over to where his surly grandson Laxus stood.
"Innate abilities like the Dragon-Slayer senses don't count as magic use so think carefully about what each guild member may bring to a team. Good luck."
Jumping down Makarov chuckled as half those looking for partners now headed straight for the four Fairy Tail Dragon-Slayers and pestered them about teaming up. He loved causing his little grandson trouble. Hearing the enraged yell of 'Gramps!' Makarov walked back into his office looking forward to the bedlam of tomorrows hunt it looked to be pure chaos.
