-"The room is exactly how you left it" Iris's dad says as he swings the door open, allowing Iris to roll her suitcase in
He was right. Nothing had changed. Framed photos align the walls.
A few with Blake.
A few with her parents.
A few with the triplets.
More than a few with Matt.
Aged painted canvases give personality to the room and paint supplies were in the corner of the room, last touched months ago.She had always shared this bedroom with her sister, the house being only a two bedroom. The sisters grew, but the room always stayed the same. Four white walls with carpet stained from over the years, and two full sized beds separated across the room. Her side was perfectly her.
Iris knew it felt weird being home without Blake.
She would never ask Blake, and deep down knew the reason why her sister had to leave Boston as soon as she could. It was harder on Blake to be in Boston surrounded by memories of their Mom. Blake made excuses to avoid returning, and feared the day she couldn't postpone it anymore."I'm happy you're home" He smiles
"I'm happy to be home" She grins back "I am surprised you never actually turned this room into an office"
"I knew you'd come crawling back to your ole' dad" He jokes "We will catch up whenever you're ready, but now that you kids are home, MaryLou and Jimmy and I want to have dinner together with everyone. Just like old times. How does that sound?"
"Tonight?" Iris asks, her father responding with a nod of the head "Yeah we can do that" She fumbles with the UPenn envelope inside her bag as she begins to unpack. She knew the longer she waited to talk to her Dad, the less and less she would want to. She releases a deep sigh and turns around to her father behind her, "Can we talk?"
"I knew something was bothering you" He chuckles with a nod "You are easy to read, kiddo"
Iris hands him the envelope as he reads the letter. Surprisingly, his facial expression stays the same as he reads, not easily giving away how he felt.
The room is silent for moments before her father breaks the tension.
"I'm so proud of you" He speaks "Your mother...would be so proud of you" He takes another moment of silence before speaking again "So you're moving to Philadelphia?"
"I don't know..." Iris responds, mindlessly messing with other items in her travel bag "Maybe? It's complicated"
"Let's start with why not?" Her father asks
"Well, I would be so far from everyone. I've made such great friends, and rekindled with the triplets. And what if Blake needs me?" Iris starts "And...I don't know...Matt is in Los Angeles..."
"I might need a little more help" He jokes "Staying in Los Angeles for Matt?"
"We have kinda became a thing. I don't know what we are. I really like him, he really likes me I hope...We aren't officially dating I guess" She admits
"I don't know why you act so surprised. Everyone saw it coming" He laughs "Everyone except you two of course"
"Dad!" She gasps "You're crazy"
"Yeah yeah" Her father responds, earning a playfully punch from Iris "You never saw the way that kid looked at you. Not only as a father, but as a man, I recognize the look" He laughs
